This position combines both the duties of Routines/Fluoroscopy (R/F) and Computerized Axial Tomography (CT) as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT) for South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS). Incumbent is the designated radiology technologist responsible for the performance and coordination of all diagnostic radiology examinations, fluoroscopic x-ray procedures as well as CT scans for the STVHCS which may include the Kerrville Division, North Central Federal Clinic, and Frank Tejeda Outpatient Clinic as needed. She/he will be expected to work various tours of duty (days, weekends, evenings, nights) with possible on-call tours and will be subject to a rotating holiday schedule. In addition to performing routine and fluoroscopic studies, incumbent will be required to perform emergency CT scans during specified irregular tours of duty. These exams are performed with and without The use of contrast materials. The purpose of the exams is to achieve diagnostic studies so that proper diagnosis and treatment may be effectuated. The incumbent works under the direction of the Radiology Work Leader and under the supervisor of the Chief Technologist. She/he works independently on most exams, but confers with radiologists and supervisor on more difficult problems and is expected to maintain current ARRT registrations.
Tour of Duty: This announcement will be utilized to fill more than one position and the tour of duty and shift is to be determined on a case-by-case basis. This may including a day shift tour, swing shift and/or evening tour of duty, and/or may also include working weekends and/or holidays.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
· Citizenship. Citizen of the United States.
· Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Computed Tomography (CT) andMagnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.
· Experience or Education Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.
· Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.
· Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for ARRT (R) certification may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate DRT under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment.
· English Language Proficiency.Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English.
· Physical Requirements: Must satisfactorily complete a pre-employment physical. See VA Directive Handbook 5019.
Creditable Experience
Knowledge of Current Radiologic Technology Practice. To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as "core competencies") associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of 1 year of active practice, which is paid or non-paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT.
Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic requirements identified above. Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination.
Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to full-time work week. For example, a DRT would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE FOR GS-09 LEVEL:
Employees at this level are fully functional as a DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level.
Note: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;
2. Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;
3. Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;
4. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;
5. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions; and
6. Knowledgeable in pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
CERTIFICATION IN COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT), CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR), AND BASIC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS) IS HIGHLY DESIRABLE.
