This position located within the Police Service at the Roseburg VA Medical Center, Roseburg, Oregon. The primary responsibility for this position is to assist the Chief of Police and Deputy Chief of Police with criminal investigations within the jurisdiction of the Police Service. The Detective Sergeant serves with full delegated authority for technical and administrative responsibilities during the Detective Sergeants tour of duty. Performs a variety of management assignments for the Chief of Police or the Deputy Chief of Police as well as performing technical police functions. Incumbent must achieve and maintain qualification in the use of agency approved firearm at an armed facility as a condition of continued employment as a VA police officer. This includes meeting the provisions of the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended by Public Law 104-208, and found at 18 USC 922. The incumbent at an armed facility will be provided appropriate training and a reasonable period of time to achieve weapons qualification. Participates in the planning, training, and 24 hour a day operation of the Roseburg VAMC Police & Security operations and the establishment of procedures and controls for the deterrence of crime at the Roseburg VAMC and all of the Outpatient Clinics and Community Based Outpatient Clinics. Have direct responsibilities for conducting basic proficiency training of the VA Police in areas of Police & Security investigations. All such activities will be under the direct supervisory control of the Chief of Police or the Deputy Chief of Police.
Work Schedule: 7:00am to 7:00pm and 7:00pm to 7:00am compressed tours

Physical Requirements: Security duties require regular and recurring walking, crouching, and prolonged standing. As a condition of continued employment Incumbent must maintain current (annual) physical examinations and psychological assessments.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-## position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-## level

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-06) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
