About the Position: The 20th CBRNE Command (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High Yield Explosives) is the higher headquarters for the majority of Army's CBRNE and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) units assigned to US Army Forces Command. CBRNE Analytical and Remediation Activity (CARA) deploys trained and ready analytical scientist and technicians to support combatant commanders, military installations and provide military support/assistance to civil authorities to detect, identify and characterize chemical, biological and explosives evidence to support intelligence, investigative, mission planning, remediation and consequence management activities directed at the elimination of weapons of mass destruction. The CARA laboratory is designed to respond as a modular, flexible set of capabilities that can be rapidly configured for mission specific measured response for programmed and immediate response requirements.

You will serve as a Chemist in a developmental capacity responsible for performing near real time monitoring and solid sorbent tube operations for the presence of toxic chemical agents. You will travel to Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) and various remote locations CONUS and OCONUS to conduct chemical sampling, monitoring and analysis operations. These field/worksite evaluations rely on a multidisciplinary approach and require a professional knowledge of chemistry and a broad background in analytical techniques to include gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS), flame photometric detector (FPD), halogen specific detector (XSD) as well as the safety and security required to perform this work in non-traditional environments.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Basic Educational Requirement: Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement, Qualified Candidates for this position must ALSO identify in their resume that they possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-07) in the federal service that demonstrates the following: 1) Assisting with environmental chemical analysis such as EPA, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). 2) With guidance, conducting toxic chemical analysis through real time monitoring and solid sorbent tube operations. 3) Utilizing knowledge of analytical techniques to include gas chromatography (GC), mass spectrometry (MS), flame photometric detector (FPD), halogen specific detector (XSD), MINICAMS.

Education Substitution for the GS-09: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Combination of education and experience.
