This position is located within the Scientific Services Division (SSD), of the Office of the Assistant Administrator Headquarters Operations in the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). The Chemist (Laboratory Safety and Operations Specialist) is responsible for developing and leading a robust laboratory safety program including proper hazardous waste disposal that is compliant with all Federal and State laboratory safety and environmental laws and regulations.

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-13. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
- Serve as the primary Safety and Chemical Hygiene Officer for SSD.
- Develop and maintain an active laboratory safety awareness program to foster a culture of safety awareness at SSD through safety training for SSD employees and safety campaigns.
- Serve as the point of contact for all safety related emergencies and incidences, and fulfill all regulatory requirements for such incidences.
- Manage SSD’s Hazardous Waste Disposal Program; including establishing contracts with external vendors for disposal of hazardous waste.
- Ensure that all ISO17025 mandated protocols for instrument operation, calibration, data collection, and maintenance/repair of laboratory equipment are followed by SSD laboratories.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your resume.
Education Requirements: Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.

Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
