The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) Dean of Faculty, Office of Student Academy Affairs & Academy Registrar Academic Success Center, anticipates filling the TERM (full-time) position of Director, Reading, Learning, and Communication Enhancement, beginning on 8 January 2018 and terminating on 30 June 2020. Subsequent re-appointments will be considered based upon an assessment of performance, Air Force and departmental needs, and funding availability. This position is in the excepted civil service.
USAFA, located just north of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is an undergraduate institution that awards the Bachelor of Science degree as part of its mission to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead in the United States Air Force and in service to our nation. Faculty applications are invited from candidates who can contribute to this mission by interacting with cadets, both in and out of the classroom, as instructors and mentors. The student body consists of approximately 4,000 men and women representing every state and several foreign countries. The Academy faculty is an integrated group of military and civilian educators. The curriculum includes core academic and professional courses, and 27 disciplinary and interdisciplinary majors.

The person will be required to serve as Reading and Communication Enhancement Program Director. This position will also provide leadership for, and promote innovation, synergy and integration across the Reading Enhancement Program, Writing Center operations, and future communication initiatives. Duties include developing and evaluating curriculum, classroom teaching, presenting/sponsoring workshops, and assisting students to enhance effective communication across a diverse, multi-disciplinary curriculum. Other duties include lesson preparation, grading, Extra Instruction (office time with cadets), research, and service to the Academy.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
The selected candidate will be subject to a security investigation leading to successful completion of a background investigation with a favorable adjudication. The selectee's failure to meet this requirement will be grounds for termination.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Doctoral degree (must be completed by employment start date) in communication, composition, rhetoric, linguistics, literacy theory, or related field, or a MFA. Essential qualities expected of every faculty member include the personal attributes of integrity, industry, cooperation, initiative, and breadth of intellectual interests.
ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES: Communication, composition, rhetoric, linguistics, literacy theory, or a related field.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience directing a reading and/or writing center or universitywide writing initiative and scholarly publications/activities associated with writing pedagogy and/or another closely-related communication/literacy area. Supervisory experience. Program assessment experience. Experience with online course development and/or online instruction. Experience working with ESL and/or international students.
Demonstrated evidence of teaching excellence at the college level for at least 5 years. Experience in teaching reading, writing, and/or public speaking at the college level. Evidence of recent publications and presentations in professional venues that demonstrate an ongoing scholarly and/or creative agenda. Experience with interdisciplinary projects relevant to the study, support, or teaching of reading and/or writing. Experience in reading or writing program administration, communication across the curriculum initiatives, and/or related literacy/education-enhancement program administration. Excellent communication skills (oral and written), motivation, interpersonal skills, compassion and ability to work with students who possess a wide range of academic abilities. Demonstrated record of building cooperation and collaboration across students and faculty.
