This position is located within the Branch of Harvest Surveys, Division of Migratory Bird Management, under the Assistant Director for Migratory Birds, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
This is a temporary appointment not to exceed 1 year. This appointment may be extended up to 1 additional year at management's discretion.
Special consideration: The Selectee must be able to lift and carry boxes and mail bags weighing up to 40 pounds.
You will serve as the Biological Technician in the Atlantic Flyway for the annual Migratory Bird Parts Collection Survey and Migratory Bird Hunter Survey conducted by the Branch of Harvest Surveys. You will be responsible for separating approximately 30,000 duck wings and/or goose tails into 28 species of ducks and 10 species of geese. You will independently organize duck wings/goose tails by species and for examination by a team of about 40 States and Federal Biologists that meet for a week to determine the age and sex. You will maintain a computer work station and wing identification work area and enter data into databases for the survey program. You will pack and mail packages of serially numbered wing envelopes to cooperating hunters, ensuring that each hunter receives the correct series of envelopes. You will perform clerical tasks for Migratory Bird Hunter Survey. You will also maintain good working relationships with fish and wildlife personnel as well as the general public.

You will be responsible for performing the following duties:
Serving as a biological technician associated with the Service's annual Migratory Bird Parts Collection Survey in the Atlantic Flyway.
Performing clerical tasks for Migratory Bird Hunter Survey.
Packing and mailing survey materials to participating hunters.
Recording information on each part received by entering the data into a computer database. Responsible for species identification and data entry for approximately 35,000 duck, dove, woodcock wings and goose tails and 1,000 band-tailed pigeon wings prior to the Flyway wingbee meeting, and for the orderly storage assignment of wings in cold storage prior to their being processed by a crew of biologists.
Recording daily and weekly records of wing receipts and forwarding this information to the Chief, Branch of Harvest Surveys, upon request. You may also be assigned other duties, time permitting, associated with the work site.

Experience must have been related to the work of the position. To qualify for the GS-05 grade level, you must have at least one year of full-time specialized experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level (comparable to GS-04) in the Federal service. The experience must have equipped you with the knowledge, skills and ability to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of this experience MUST include all of the following: knowledge of and experience with avian identification and taxonomy, especially waterfowl species; experience working with dichotomous keys; maintains a computer work station and wing identification area; ability to follow instructions and maintain an organized work space; ability to work with other personnel, agencies, and the public.

Completed a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in any combination of scientific or technical courses such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture or mathematics, with 6 semester hours of courses directly related to the position such as avian ecology, ornithology, wildlife management (birds), etc. You must submit copies of your official transcripts to be considered for this position.

Have a combination of specialized experience (as in A above) and education (as in B above), when prorated, combine to meet the qualification requirements of this position. Experience and education are each computed as percentages of their requirements and must equal at least 100 percent when combined. only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. NOTE: You must submit copies of your official transcripts if you wish to be considered with your education.
