Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday; 4:00 pm - Midnight with rotating weekends and holidays.
Duties include:
Serves as medical technologist charged with the performance of nearly all available tests performed in the hospital laboratory. Required to be well-versed in all areas; i.e., Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Phlebotomy, and Microbiology. Obtains specimens suitable for analysis and using established guidelines, selects appropriate testing procedures and instrumentation for performance of required services. Ensures that specimens are maintained in proper manner so as to insure that the physiologic state of samples remain intact to the time of processing. Performs, evaluates and monitors the procedures necessary for non-routine testing such as therapeutic drug monitoring, and also manual testing required for off-hour patient care. Calibrates, standardizes and maintains instruments insuring proper operation and accurate patient data output using established procedures and guidelines and instrument manuals provided. Recognizes indications of instruments malfunction and acts appropriately to remedy the cause of minor problems using acquired expertise and proper troubleshooting techniques. Ensures that proper quality control procedures are performed on all instrumentation and reagents maintaining records necessary for adequate quality control, as well as performing maintenance on certain instruments. Evaluates the validity and accuracy of testing procedures which produce unusual or abnormal results by validating the quality control data with the testing data to determine the validity of patient results. Repeats unusual results with the same sample and/or a newly obtained specimen to confirm the absence of error and reports the finding to the physician without delay. May be assigned the duties of Acting Supervisor with supervisory authority during specific times of necessity. Other duties as assigned.

This is a Bargaining Unit position.

A. Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
B. Education and/or Experience Combination: An Associate's Degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution composed of at least sixty (60) semester hours, that, at a minimum, includes either: (a) twenty-four (24) hours of medical laboratory technology courses or (b) twenty-four (24) semester hours of science courses that includes six (6) semester hours of chemistry; six (6) semester hours of biology and twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and have laboratory training that includes completion of a NAACLS approved clinical laboratory training program with at least three (3) months documented laboratory training in each specialty that the individual performs high complexity testing. In addition to the Associate's Degree, must possess at least 3 years of directly related, full-time work experience.
C. Certification: All candidates must currently possess or be eligible for and pass within one year of the appropriate certification examination as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), the American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). D) English Language Proficiency: Medical Technologists must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, chapter 2, section D. paragraph 5a. GS-9: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, must have a Bachelor degree in medical technology/clinical laboratory science or a related science and completion of medical technology clinical practice program. Both the education and the clinical practice program must have been approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). In addition, candidates for the GS-9 must possess EITHER one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level OR must have two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Master's degree in Medical Technology or directly related field.
1. Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for certification may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate medical technologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment.
2. Loss of Credential. An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain licensure/certification/registration within the required time frame, or who fails to maintain the required licensure/certification/registration must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment.
In addition to meeting the basic requirements the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Comprehensive knowledge of professional medical technology/clinical laboratory science principles, practices, concepts, and theories providing for sound independent work.
2. Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory quality control and assurance procedures and principles of performance improvement providing for sound independent work.
3. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and ability to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation.
4. Ability to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results.
5. Ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions.
6. Ability to communicate, consult, and interact with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS: Grades and salaries will be determined by the Professional Standards Board (PSB).
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
