Rotating Tours of Duty to include days, weekends, and extended hours. Tours of duty may include 7:00am - 3:30P, 7:30am 4:00pm, 8:00am 4:30pm, 08:30am -5:00pm, 9:30am 6:00pm, or 11:30am 8:00pm.
These positions will be located in Austin Outpatient Clinic/Specialty Clinics:
The LVN performs patient care duties under the direct supervision of the RN. He/she provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, spiritual, chronological, recreational, and diversion needs of the adult (ages 17-59) or geriatric (ages 65+) patient. The LVN demonstrates knowledge of changes associated with aging and provides care based upon age related factors as specified in his/her competencies. Contributes to the interdisciplinary team in developing, implementing, and evaluating the patient's treatment plan. Promotes patient participation in the therapeutic community by fostering self-reliance and independence. Performs assigned duties, treatments, or procedures in acceptable timeframes, following established policies and practices. Performs more complex treatments as assigned. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability while promoting a team oriented concept of providing quality service.
Functional Statement Title: Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) GS 3-6.
Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
Basic Requirements:
· U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
· Must be a graduate of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the National League for Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
· Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
· Must have a full, current, active and unrestricted license as a graduate licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or District of Columbia.
· Must pass a pre-employment examination if selected.
Preferred Experience:
· A minimum of 3 years of successful clinical nursing practice as a LVN
· Experience in Nail & Feet Care, Wound Care
· Surgical Nurse or Scrub Tech experience
· 2 years experience in ambulatory care/outpatient care
· Evidence of continuous learning, such as attending seminars or conferences, continuing formal education and providing in-services back to the unit staff
· Demonstrated skill in performing multiple tasks, managing assignments, and expediting oral and written communications
· Demonstrated ability to interact with others effectively and appropriately, presenting a professional image of the service and the VA
· Skill in utilizing VistA, BCMA, CPRS, Outlook, fax machines, copiers, etc
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations:
(1) GS-3. None beyond the basic requirements. LPNs at this grade level are expected to perform all duties within the scope of their license (e.g., medication administration); however, completed work may require routine or detailed higher level review depending upon the complexity of the duties involved.
(2) GS-4. Six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; or
(b) Graduation from an approved school (which may be waived as provided in paragraph 4 of Section C) and one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures; or
(c) Graduation from an approved school of at least 24 months duration.
(d) LPNs at the GS-4 grade level perform all duties expected of employees at the GS-3 grade level; however, they are expected to exercise greater judgment, require less supervision, and to operate in accordance with all established policies, procedure, and techniques.]
(3) GS-5. Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience at the GS-4 level or equivalent.
(4) GS-6. Completion of at least one 1 year of additional qualifying experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN/LVN.
