The incumbent is responsible for performing comprehensive surveillance for health care-associated infections and epidemiologically significant organisms. Creates, implements, supports and sustains evidence based interventions to prevent them through the following methods:
Apply epidemiology principles and statistical methods, including risk stratification, to identify target population, analyze trends and risk factors, and design and evaluate prevention and control strategies.
Conduct on-going surveillance using the Center of Disease Control (CDC) infection criteria, documentation, and investigation of health care acquired infections through review of admissions diagnoses, microbiology, culture results, isolation orders, patient records, consultation requests, post-discharge surveillance, and autopsy findings.
Assess environment control through surveillance of water supply systems as needed. Conduct environmental rounds in all inpatient and outpatient care areas.
Collect data on the incidence of selected device use in intensive care units and other patient care areas. Directs investigations of unusual hospital infection outbreaks utilizing the micro biology laboratory, consultation with Infectious Disease Division, county/state public health departments, and CDC. Reports significant findings.
The incumbent is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Service Unit Infection Control (IC) Program including the TB program and Infection Control and Prevention Plan. Assures that the programs meet all regulatory and accreditation requirements. Serves as consultation to administration and medical professionals, housekeeping and allied health staff.
Collects data and prepares reports in support of epidemiological studies of specific problems or problem areas to determine the source of the problem and makes appropriate recommendations.
Selects quality/performance improvement indicators by assessing, monitoring, and measuring health care acquired infections and evaluating outcomes on a continuous basis. Prepares quarterly and yearly reports for the Hospital Executive Council (HEC), Quality Council, Governing Body and Clinical Practices Committee.
Maintains medical devices, surgical procedures and surgical site infections data into the National Health Safety Network (NHSN).
The incumbent collaborates with the Employee Health Nurse to develop, administer and evaluate the Employee Health Program, assuring that all regulatory requirements are met.

Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.
Registration: Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
For GS-12: 1 year of experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EXPERIENCE: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: A professional understanding of the practice of medicine, diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic approaches related to a variety of medical and health care fields including surveillance and epidemiological processes. Knowledge of the epidemiologic principles and statistical methods, including risk stratification, for the purpose of infection surveillance in order to design and evaluate prevention and control strategies. Knowledge of microbiology, infectious diseases and antimicrobial therapy to prevent resistance of microbes. Ability to run and interpret statistical programs and antimicrobial therapy to prevent resistance of microbes. Ability to teach and communicate effectively through the Service Unit and prepare written reports.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
