The Chemotherapy and Infusion nurse is responsible for administering, monitoring, documenting and evaluating interventions and treatments provided in the Chemotherapy/Infusion Suite and/or related to hematologic/oncologic related problems. These interventions may include: Airway management/provision of BLS, appropriate use of AED, venipuncture, access and management of Port-A-Cath and PASport implanted devices as well as peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) devices, interpret laboratory values, transfusion of blood and blood components, and safe management of chemotherapy spills, 12 Lead electrocardiographic monitoring, tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/PEG tube care, indwelling and/or intermittent urinary catheterization, administration of high alert medications and/or immunotherapy and any other medications or treatments administered in the Chemotherapy/Infusion Suite

Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical, surgical and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is a large outpatient psychiatric population with admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
