VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS), located in Seattle, Washington, is recruiting for a Physician to serve as their Deputy Chief of Staff to provide administrative, programmatic, and clinical leadership for the medical center. VAPSHCS is a level 1A, academic, tertiary health care system, affiliated with the University of Washington, and was deemed to provide the highest complexity of care in all the Department of Veterans Affairs. Staffed by approximately 4300 FTEE, VAPSHCS provides a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, plus education and research.
The Deputy Chief of Staff at the Seattle VA Medical Center reports to the Chief of Staff of the Health Care System and collaborates with the Deputy Director, Associate Director for Nursing Services and the Assistant Director in daily operational activities. In addition, they will collaborate with the VISN 20 Network Management, other VISN 20 Network facilities, the Veterans Health Administration and various entities with the VA.
The Deputy Chief of Staff is responsible for the clinical operation of VA Puget Sound Healthcare System. They will support the graduate medical education programs and the applied biomedical and clinical research programs in collaboration with the Associate Chief of Staff for Research. The Deputy Chief of Staff may have direct patient care responsibilities within his/her area of clinical expertise.
The Deputy Chief of Staff is responsible for the performance management and quality improvement for the clinical services, including Diagnostic Imaging, Geriatrics and Extended Care, Mental Health, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service, Primary and Specialty Care, Quality Improvement, Rehabilitation Care, Spinal Cord Injury and the Surgical and Perioperative Care Services. The Deputy Chief of Staff also works closely with the Manager of Credentialing and Privileging office to ensure regulatory and procedural requirements are met.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Delivery of high quality, cost-effective, and safe patient care.
- Meeting or exceeding performance goals.
- Ensuring all applicable regulatory and accrediting body requirements for a tertiary care facility within the Department of Veterans Affairs are met.
- Maintains a positive relationship with the University of Washington, other affiliated institutions, educational programs and contracts.
- Serves in a leadership role in the Joint Executive Council developing opportunities.
- Ensures implementation of policy.
- Manages professional staff matters.
- Provides leadership to the Clinical Executive Board (Executive Committee of the Medical Staff) and the clinical services lines.
- Directly supervises clinical and administrative managers of the clinical services lines.
- Leads or is an active member in various task groups and committees that address clinical issues at the local, VISN and National VHA level.
- Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. Applicants must have the mental and physical ability to perform core privileges required by the specialty position in addition to any specialty privileges requested.

2. Have a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting for a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the
Association of American Medical
Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic
Association for the year the degree was
granted.
- Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a
State, Territory, or Commonwealth
(i.e. Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or
unrestricted licensure.
3. Must possess and maintain current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
4. Completion of a residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
5. Preferred board certified in any specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialty.
6. Basic Life Support Certified.
7. Meet the physical standards outlined in VA Directive and Handbook 5019. This will be evidenced by completion of a pre-employment physical.
8. As this a direct patient care position, physician selected must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7407(d).

*Competence in advanced management skills.
