Physical Demands/Work Environment:
The work is strenuous, requiring climbing, walking and running over uneven terrain, bending, hacking through underbrush, and lifting and carrying heavy equipment weighing over 50 pounds. There is potential for burns, dehydration, and smoke inhalation. Work requires the use of specialized protective clothing and gear. The employee may conduct some activities from low flying aircraft and helicopters. Firefighting is extremely arduous and hazardous. The work requires strenuous physical exertion, including carrying heavy objects, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, hacking through underbrush and using heavy tools for long periods of time. Most work is performed outdoors in a forest and/or rangeland setting. Terrain ranges from flat and swampy to steep and rocky and is often covered with thick, tangled vegetation or various trees and grasses. Temperature extremes, smoke, and dust are frequently severe. The hazardous nature of the work requires the use of protective gear and clothing (boots, hard hat, nomex clothing, gloves, etc). The work is typically performed in isolated locations, which are often away from roads and water sources; camping is necessary for extended periods.

THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION. Applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position will be required prior to appointment to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use. The employee selected will be required to work a non-standard tour of duty that may include weekends, holidays, and night shifts.
The incumbent will be required to obtain and wear an official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform.
Incumbent must be able to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle. A valid state driver's license is required.

This positions sensitivity level has been designated as non-sensitive. Accordingly, the selectee must undergo a background investigation prior to appointment.

Successful completion of one year (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) of graduate level study at an accredited college or university in a field directly related to range technician work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject matter field directly related to this position.

I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 level in the Federal Service demonstrated by performing wildland, fire preparedness, suppression and/or fuels management. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include participating in implementing prescribed fire or fire use plans to ensure fire objectives can be met from a fire management standpoint and developing initial attack incident management strategies and tactics to meet the stated resource objectives.

This experience can be met by serving in a temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector fire position for no less than 90 days. Periods of wildland firefighting experience, gained through militia and rural fire departments, can also be credited, as long as the total amount of this experience equates to at least 90 days.
