This full-time permanent position is located at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas, in the Rehabilitation and Extended Care Line (RECL). The incumbent is responsible for independently developing and implementing physical therapy (PT) treatment programs for a variety of diagnoses, using appropriate judgment to modify treatment due to changing medical conditions or a variety of severe physical disabilities. Services will be provided primarily to inpatients and outpatients with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Duties include, but are not limited to:
*Reviewing medical records and independently evaluating patients (including utilization and interpretation of functional tests and measurements) to determine functional deficits and the best method of accomplishing rehabilitation goals
*Developing and implementing individualized, patient-centered treatment programs
*Applying recognized treatment procedures, modifying them as necessary to avoid interference with traction devices, surgical drains, catheters, etc.
*Evaluating for, recommending, and/or fitting wheelchairs and cushions, assistive devices, and adaptive equipment
*Conducting patient and caregiver training and developing appropriate home programs
*Supervising assigned trainees and interns
*Maintaining adequate supplies, materials, and equipment for anticipated treatment needs
*Maintaining statistical data on assigned patients and submitting data for reports as requested
Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday, with some weekend work required. Alternate work schedule may be available.
Functional Statement Title: Physical Therapist
Physical Requirements: Regular moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), with occasional heavy lifting of up to 50 pounds (such as when transferring patients or moving equipment); daily, varying periods of sitting, standing, bending, walking, squatting/stooping, twisting, climbing stairs, pushing, pulling, grasping, and reaching over shoulders; fine manipulation required intermittently (up to 2-3 hours per day).

1. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, physics, kinesiology, psychology, pathophysiology, and surgical procedures as they relate to human function
2. Knowledge of, and the ability to apply, clinically-appropriate assessment techniques and treatment interventions to address human pathophysiology and dysfunction
3. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, caregivers, and other health care professions
GS-11
EXPERIENCE (OR ADDITIONAL EDUCATION) REQUIRED One year of progressively-complex and broad PT experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, OR a doctoral degree in PT or a directly-related field or three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree.
DEMONSTRATED KSA's REQUIRED All of the following KSA's must be fully demonstrated:
1. Knowledge of contemporary and evidence-based PT practice
2. Ability to interpret clinician prescriptions and referrals
3. Skill in communicating, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, caregivers, and other health care professions to facilitate the multidisciplinary treatment process
4. Skill in utilizing appropriate screening and evaluation techniques required to appropriately provide patient care
5. Knowledge of clinical signs and symptoms to make appropriate referrals for further medical attention/assessment as indicated
Note: Completion of a post-graduate fellowship or a post-graduate residency program may substitute for creditable experience on a year-for-year basis.
