The Inpatient Psychiatric Nursing Assistant will participate in Veteran's Centered Activities that supports a personal preferences proactive approach. Maintain positive patient/resident/family relationships, which include recognizing and understanding the effect of social and spiritual factors. Provide patient/resident personal hygiene care by giving assistance with toileting, bathing, hand/finger nail care, foot care, oral hygiene, backrubs, shampoos, and shaves. Provide for activities of daily living by assisting with serving meals, feeding patient/resident as necessary; providing fresh water and nourishment between meals; ambulating, turning, and positioning patient/residents as needed. Provide patient/resident comfort by utilizing available resources and materials; escorting patient/residents within VA HVHCS and to other VA facilities for appointments/transfers where indicated; answering patient/residents' call lights and requests; reporting observations of the patient/resident to nursing supervisor; communicating with patient/resident; utilizing de-escalation skills, when needed. Document actions, observations, and education provided by completing forms, reports, and records in CPRS NA care. Maintain work operations by following policies and procedures. Protect organization's values by keeping patient/resident information confidential. This position is assigned to the Mental Health Unit-(4CD) in the Nursing Service program.
Acute psychiatric work experience as a Nursing Assistant; certification as a Nursing Assistant; and Basic Life Skills (BLS) preferred.
These full-time positions are located at the Montrose Campus. Various Shifts are available (Days/Evenings/Nights). the required tour will be discussed during the interview process. Travel between both the Montrose and Castle Point Campuses may be required.

Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), pulling, pushing, repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking, depth perception , hearing (aide permitted); near/far vision correctable to meet Driver's License requirements. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
Work requires extensive walking, standing, stretching and bending in caring for patients in wards.
Basic Requirements:
All Nursing Assistants employed in VHA on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the series and grade held that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply:
(1) Employees who are appointed on a temporary basis prior to the effective date of the qualification standard may not have their temporary appointment extended or be reappointed, on a temporary or permanent basis, until they fully meet the basic requirements of the standard.
(2) If an employee who was retained (grandfathered) under this provision leaves the occupation, the employee loses protected status of the grandfathering provision and must meet the full VA qualification standard basic requirements in effect at the time of re-entry to the occupation.
Acute psychiatric work experience as a Nursing Assistant; certification as a Nursing Assistant; and Basic Life Skills (BLS) preferred.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Grade Determinations:
a. Creditable Experience
(1) Knowledge of Current Practice: To be creditable, the experience must have required the use of knowledge, skills, and abilities associated with the current practice.
(2) Quality of Experience: To be creditable, CNA experience must be documented on the application or resume and verified in an employment reference, or through other independent means.
(3) Part-Time Experience: Part-time experience as a CNA is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a CNA employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service.
b. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates:
(1) GS-3 NA (Entry Level)
(a) Experience and Education: None beyond the basic requirements.
(b) Assignment: Individuals assigned as GS-3 CNAs are considered to be at the entry level and are closely supervised.
(2) GS-4 NA
(a) Experience: One year of specialized experience as a NA or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments;
OR
(b) Education: Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians;
AND
(c) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
(3) GS-5 NA (Full Performance Level)
(a) Experience: One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level, which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (c) below;

(b) Education: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a Bachelor's Degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a Bachelor's Degree;
