Performs Histopathology Technician duties performing a variety of technical functions such as collecting surgical/autopsy specimens for gross examination and processing. Maintain a catalogue record of all organs/tissues saved from autopsies and surgical specimens, fixes tissue/organs in proper preservative solution and stores in proper area. Uses computerized or automated data equipment to perform tests. Monitor and program tissue processing machines. Perform a variety of tasks to receive, prepare and process autopsy, biopsy and other surgical specimens for histopathological analysis. Perform a variety of autopsy and gross surgical material procedures in Autopsy Room. Receive human remains and prepare remains for autopsy; assists in performing highly technical procedures to remove tissue or organs to be salvaged for donation or for special studies so organs will not be contaminated or compromised. Responsible for securing laboratory/autopsy room; may be called to accommodate surgery and morgue workload; may assist at two or more autopsies simultaneously. Work with distillation machinery to recycle alcohol, xylene and formalin, taking appropriate precautions for hazardous waste handling.
