About the Position:
The position is located at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School (USMAPS) with diverse and motivated students in a year-long, post-high-school, developmental education program designed to prepare them for admission as freshmen to the 4-year undergraduate program at the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. USMAPS is co-located with the United States Military Academy in the scenic Hudson River Valley, only 50 miles from New York City. This is a nationally-renowned, historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. As a military installation, West Point is a small, self-contained city with housing for the military stationed here in support of the Academy, a Department of Public Works, two libraries (Academic and Community), a military hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. West Point's civilian employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theatre, the Hudson Valley's premiere performing arts center, and to recreational facilities.

As an Instructor of Mathematics, you will teach high school and college level courses in mathematics to soldiers selected for future attendance to the United States Military Academy. Courses will include algebra, trigonometry, precalculus and Advanced Placement Calculus. You will select the most appropriate teaching methods to include lecture, discussion, demonstration, and discovery using technology. You will adapt subject matter and methods to fit the needs of students. You will evaluate student work, maintain good order and discipline, and conduct supplementary classes as needed. You will be expected to maintain professional contacts in your field. You will serve as academic counselor, analyzing student aptitude, motivation and leadership, and providing guidance on academic and military life at USMAPS/USMA. You will participate in meetings on curriculum development and provide recommendations and feedback on curriculum and examination revisions and on textbook selection. You will participate as a representative on various student/faculty committees.

Basic Requirement:
Applicants must hold a bachelor's or higher degree (master's degree preferred) that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject matter field appropriate to the position (mathematics or related field) or have a combination of education and experience (courses equivalent to a major in education or subject-matter field as above, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above).
Experience required:
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: 1) Mathematics instruction that required professional knowledge of learning theory and 2) teaching methods in the field of mathematics, to include the use of technology in the classroom. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) in the following areas:
1) Academic accomplishment (an earned bachelor's degree with a master's degree preferred) in mathematics education or mathematics supported by course work indicating knowledge of the mathematics education field and principles, methods, and techniques applicable to the teaching of mathematics;
2) Experience teaching and directing Algebra/Trigonometry, Precalculus, and AP Calculus (at least five or more years preferred of teaching experience with students from diverse backgrounds needing remediation in preparation for admission to a four-year college program);
3) Experience in and evidence of successfully developing and evaluating math curricula for a post high school/college level remedial advanced math program leading to the USMA math curriculum to include test construction and analysis;
4) Evidence of the ability to develop and sustain strong intra- and interdepartmental relationships with diverse staff and faculty through departmental, institutional, or professional service, and leading and participating in ongoing faculty development; and
5) Ability to support the personal growth and development of cadet candidates in and out of the classroom; serving as a role model for future West Point cadets and Army Officers.

For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in education or a field related to the subject area to be taught (Mathematics).
