The Research Directorate at NASA Langley Research Center is currently seeking interested applicants for the position of Research Aerospace Engineer (Computational Aeroelastician) in the Aeroelasticity Branch (D308). The Researcher is a technical expert in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) that conceives, plans, and conducts research to improve analysis and design methods for flexible aerospace systems using high-performance computing systems. This work involves addressing technical issues, investigating technical problems, and proposing solutions associated with the stability and performance of flexible aerospace vehicles that experience aerodynamic forces, elastic forces, and inertial forces that are functions of the vehicle structural characteristics, vehicle shape and motion, onboard control systems, and external disturbances. The expected outcome of this research program is an expanded utilization of CFD for fluid structure interactions in the aerospace vehicle design process, allowing high-fidelity CFD simulations to be used earlier in a multidisciplinary design environment.
The Researcher addresses the barrier problem of obtaining efficient three-dimensional time-dependent solutions at off-design conditions (i.e. maximum lift, buffet and flutter) for complex geometries. The focus of the research is the development of validated computational technology appropriate to multi-point aerodynamic design including aerodynamic sensitivity derivatives, aeroelastic effects, and transonic unsteady flow prediction for large-scale aerospace systems at high Reynolds numbers.
Develops software systems for use on high-performance distributed computing systems. The incumbent applies knowledge and experience in the computational requirements for geometrically complex, flexible aerospace systems across the speed range, including steady and unsteady flows, using structured multiblock-grid and unstructured-grid computational algorithms. Research is typically beyond the state-of-the-art in aerodynamic methodology for airframe systems.
This position in computational aeroelasticity requires the ability to apply CFD and analytical methods ranging from linear aerodynamic theory to the numerical solution of the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations to treat a variety of aeroelastic problems of aerospace vehicles. The Researcher must calibrate, investigate, develop, and apply analysis methods for viscous interaction problems including shock-boundary layer interaction, vortex flows and separation for efficient application to complex aerospace vehicles and models, particularly at transonic Mach numbers. At times, the Researcher serves as a team member or as a project engineer in studies to support the development of DoD, industry, and NASA aerospace vehicles and projects. The incumbent's research involves interdisciplinary applications of aerodynamics, structures, controls, and dynamics. Duties may also include monitoring and evaluating research grants and contracts as required for conducting this research.
