The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an environmental physical scientist with project management, execution, and operations responsibility in assigned project(s) within a program element. To provide effective management and directorship of the administrative, financial, and technical aspects of the assigned environmental program(s). Provides extensive environmental expertise to support assigned environmental projects through application of professional knowledge and skill in (insert discipline) practices, processes and techniques, and assignments Provides extensive environmental expertise to support assigned environmental projects through application of professional knowledge and skill in (insert discipline) practices, processes and techniques. Assignments pertain to (1) problems encountered in achieving compliance with Federal, state, and local environmental control regulations (e.g., air, water, and hazardous waste); (2) the full range of domestic and industrial waste water treatment and disposal to include toxic chemicals; (3) oversight and/or preparation and updating of inventories and corrective measures to reduce pollutants emitted to water, atmosphere, or land from the installation and operations, or constitute a health hazard to an installation or adjacent civilian communities; coordination of actions required for funding, design; construction; and operation of equipment or facilities to correct deficiencies and to ensure compliance with environmental regulations; (4) studies to evaluate potential pollution sources, initiation of corrective measures required to prevent or counteract pollution potential, and preparation of contingency plans; and (5) programs directly or indirectly related to environmental issues such as hazardous waste spill recovery programs, chemical and biological treatment of domestic and industrial and/or chemical wastes generated at the installation, and disposal and recycling of trash and refuse to include medical waste.
Other Significant Facts:
1. Appointment is contingent upon passing a physical examination.

3. Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.

Physical Demands:
The work requires regular and recurring construction or field inspections,
investigations, or surveys in which there is a considerable amount of walking,
stooping, bending, and climbing.
Working Environment:
The majority of the work is in an office setting. However, during site
inspections there is regular and recurring exposure to unfavorable conditions
such as working in areas under construction with conditions such as noise,
particulate matter, machinery; water, soil or air under treatment containing chemicals,
bacteria and toxic particulates, and concentrated wastes from the treatment or
cleaning process. Sites visited may include remote areas infested by snakes,
insects or reptiles.
Basic Requirements
1. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
2. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
Candidates must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to federal service at the NH-I (or equivalent grade level, pay schedule, pay band, etc.) or higher level. Specialized experience is defined as providing effective planning, coordinating, and management and directorship of the administrative, financial and technical aspects of the assigned environmental programs; through application of professional knowledge and skill in the practices, processes, and techniques in Physical Science (Environmental).
The description of your work experience in your application (resume with acceptable format) must clearly demonstrate that you have gained and currently possess the following knowledge, skill, and abilities to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position being filled:
1. Knowledge of professional environmental principles, practices, techniques, and procedures to effectively perform project development, execution, training, and advisory services in assigned projects.
2. Knowledge to troubleshoot environmental problems requiring investigation of unsanitary or questionable conditions in assigned projects.
3. Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, integration principles and practices, and other guidance to make decisions and recommendations concerning restoration, compliance, conservation, pollution prevention projects.
4. Ability to establish effective working relationships with others.
5. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, clearly, concisely, and with technical accuracy.
OR Have successfully completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that includes 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and/or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours worked per week.
