The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) is seeking a full-time Nursing Assistants (NA) for Nursing Service. This announcement may be use for additional NA vacancies that arise.
The incumbent will perform assignments required of a Nursing Assistant in the Medical-Surgical area, and will uphold the standards of care as outlined by Medical Center and Nursing Service policies and procedures. The nursing care activities listed below are not all inclusive of the tasks performed at this level. Duties include:
· Provides complete personal hygiene care including bowel and bladder needs. Turns and positions patients to maintain proper body alignment. Lifts, ambulates, and transfers patients wearing Back Support Vest, using good body mechanics, and equipment such as a Hoyer Lift and Davis Roller.
· Promotes physical independence of the patient by encouraging and teaching individual patients and groups of patients in self-care activities, such as progressive steps in personal hygiene, bathing and oral care, eating, dressing and undressing, and bladder and bowel training.
· Applies comfort, protective and supportive devices such as scrotal supports, binders, slings, stockings, safety belts, side-rails, pillows, and restraints.
· Prepares patients for meals, feeds, and assists those requiring help.
· Takes, records and reports vital signs, weights, neurological checks, and circulatory checks.
· Applies external urinary devices. Collects specimens such as urine, sputum and stool. Cares for drainage apparatus. Accurately measures and records intake and output.
· Performs blood glucose monitoring and records results.
· Prepares and gives enemas as specifically directed by the professional nurse.
· Assists the physician and/or nurse with diagnostic or therapeutic procedures such as physical examination, lumbar puncture, and minor surgical procedures, by assembling and arranging equipment and positioning patients.
· Sets up and gives treatments such as for oxygen therapy, postural drainage, and aquathermia therapy, and oral suctioning.
· Adheres to basic principles of asepsis, universal precautions and isolation techniques to provide a safe environment for patients and employees.
· Orders and operates special equipment such as special beds, suction equipment, and overhead trapeze bars.
· Follows policies and procedures related to fire, disaster, safety, computer access, and security measures. Interprets Medical Center regulations and policies to patients, relatives and visitors.
· Performs tasks requiring basic aseptic technique such as, sterile dressing changes.
· Records in the patient's medical record observations and nursing care procedures which he/she performs.
· Participates in the admission, discharge, and transfer of patients.
· Cares for patients who require close observation (eg., patients in leather restraints). Adapts nursing care to meet patient's physical and emotional needs. Promptly reports changes in patient's condition to the team leader. Documents care given.
· Recognizes an emergent change in the physical and emotional condition of patients and takes appropriate action.
· Initiates and/or assists with emergency measures, including maintaining airway, CPR, and protecting patients having seizures.
· Responds and assists in the management of the patient who loses control of behavior and becomes harmful to himself and others by applying physical restraint or other measures as directed by the professional nurse and/or physician.
· Performs postmortem care.
· Prepares and escorts patients to and from appointments.
· Communicates effectively with patients, families and nursing team member.
· Performs other related nursing duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: Work requires walking, standing, stooping, lifting, bending, pushing, turning, and at times carrying heavy loads. Must be able to utilize good body mechanics and have stamina to withstand stress.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship: Citizen of the United States.
Education or Training: One year above high school with courses related to the NA occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407 (d). No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C. Chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity who is not proficient in written and spoken English.
Grade Determinations:
Experience/Education Requirements at GS-3: None beyond the basic
requirements.
Experience/Education Requirements at GS-4: Applicant must
possess one year of specialized experience as a NA or experience in another
medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman,
etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human
physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills
required for basic and intermediate treatments. Examples of Specialized
experience may include but are not limited to: Providing complete personal
hygiene care needs. Turns and positions patients to maintain proper body
alignment, lifts, ambulates, and transfers patients. Promotes the physical
independence of the patient by encouraging and teaching individual patients and
groups of patients in self care activities, such as progressive steps in
personal hygiene, bathing, and oral care, also assists in teaching and
encouraging other care activities such as eating, dressing, undressing, and
bladder and other training as needed.
OR
Education: Applicant must possess 2 years above high school in an
accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in
a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as
education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room
technicians. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED).
Experience/Education Requirements at GS-5: Applicant must
possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level. Specialized
experience is defined as: Providing complete personal hygiene care needs.
Turns and positions patients to maintain proper body alignment, lifts,
ambulates, and transfers patients. Promotes the physical independence of the
patient by encouraging and teaching individual patients and groups of patients
in self care activities, such as progressive steps in personal hygiene,

high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of
