The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) serves as an assistant with line authority to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit Nurse Manager in providing leadership and direction to nursing staff. She/he is accountable for adhering to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice; demonstrating leadership in improving nursing care; and the administration, management, supervision and evaluation of both nursing care and nursing personnel in the SICU.
She/he demonstrates, promotes, creates and ensures a culturally diverse workforce in which the values and needs of all individuals are respected. Provides an environment that fosters employees to perform to their full individual potential.
The ANM has a leadership role in utilizing problem-solving methodologies to resolve system and/or process problems that impact patient care or staff performance at the unit level and is supported by documented evidence of:
Assuming responsibility for meeting an identified need;
Developing and implementing a plan to meet
the identified need; and Evaluating/providing substantiation of
improved patient care or staff performance relative to the identified need. Leads other staff members on the resolution
of patient care problems.
Provides appropriate care for veterans ranging in age from 18 through the geriatric years, taking into consideration diagnosis and physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs.
Identifies opportunities for improvement and initiates, develops, implements and evaluates plans that result in improved patient care and/or productivity of providers at the unit/team/work group level. Works collaboratively with the nurse manager in the management of patient care and programs. Interacts with patients and responds immediately to any expressions of concern about care. Conducts initial informal review of patient complaints or incidents.
Evaluates practice of self and others using professional standards, relevant statutes and regulations (such as ANA and other professional specialty group standards of care and practice, Nursing Service and Medical Center standards of care and practice, community standards, Nurse Practice Act and VHS directives and guidelines). Initiates and develops action which results in improvement in performance of self and others.
In collaboration with the nurse manager, identifies need for staff education at the unit/team/work group level. Coordinates, organizes and leads staff in the presentation of unit/team/work group educational offerings. Maintains knowledge of current practice, trends and professional issues to enhance own performance through continuing education, review of current healthcare literature and/or professional affiliations.
Acts as a resource person in accurately interpreting and communicating policies and procedures. Demonstrates leadership in teaching, counseling and advising staff in patient care issues. Assists the nurse manager in the evaluation of staff and implements strategies to promote staff's professional development.
Accepts delegated assignments from the Nurse Manager for selected quality monitors, staff education, performance evaluations or other nursing care delivery aspects. Serves on nursing service and facility committees or task forces as assigned by the Nurse Manager
Identifies, analyzes and resolves ethical issues with staff and clients. Assists staff in the resolution of ethical issues on the unit. Maintains confidentiality of electronic, written and o/or verbal patient/employee information.
Effectively assists the nurse manager in managing unit resources which results in decreased waste, improved efficiencies and/or decreased liabilities while maintaining or enhancing care and practice. Effectively develops the time schedule in a timely manner per union contract Monitors workload throughout the tour and adjusts assignments as needed. Participates in the interviewing process for staff selection, fact finding, counseling staff and evaluating staff performance.

Tour of duty: 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM, Standard core hours with rotation to supervise, mentor,
and observe evening and night shift nurses.
Supervisory Controls:
The SICU Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) reports directly to the Nurse Manager, SICU. The immediate supervisor monitors the practice of the ANM by direct and indirect observations.
Physical Requirements:
Must possess mental and emotional stability. Functional requirements include the following abilities: Heavy lifting of 45 pounds and over, light carrying under 15 pound, use of fingers/ both hands are required, walking for four (4) hours, standing for four (4) hours, both legs are required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other eye, ability to distinguish shades of color, hear the whispered voice (aid permitted). Environmental Factors required: Working with hands in water, working closely with others and protracted or irregular hours of work.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
The following requirements are preferred for this position:
Applicants should possess experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality.
· Four (3) years of recent professional nursing experience in a Critical Care Unit.
· National Certification in Critical Care Nursing (CCRN) or a related field.
· BSN or Bachelor's Degree in a health related field; MSN preferred
· Demonstrated competencies in clinical practice and team building
· Effective communication and organizational skills, including computer literacy.
Grade Determinations: Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:
