The Primary Care Physician Assistant is responsible for managing the full spectrum of primary care responsibilities including admissions, evaluations, diagnosis and treatment and consultation for patients presenting with general medicine complaints and diseases. The PA will order appropriate lab work, diagnostics tests, request consultations to specialty services, provide follow up care, and refer patients, as needed, to appropriate disciplines for diagnosis and treatment.
The Physician Assistant will work in a team setting with physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses and support staff. Computer skills are essential for note documentation, entering orders and requesting consults.
The Primary Care Physician Assistant (PACT Provider) duties include the following:
The incumbent is accountable to the ACOS for Ambulatory Care. She/he uses professional judgment and expertise to make decisions, about services and treatments provided to the veteran patients within their area of responsibility. The Physician Assistant receives guidance and consultation on practice through VHA directives, handbooks, and information letters; VISN and facility policies and procedures.
Physical Standards: The tasks of this position generally require sitting, standing, occasional crouching or kneeling. Moderate lifting is required. Considerable manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination are continuously required. This includes continuous observation of a computer screen. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation demands coordination and stamina. Heavy Lifting (50 LBS and over); Heavy Carrying (50 LBS and over); Straight Pulling (up to 1 hour); Pushing (1 2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Repeated bending (up to 1 hour); Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Hearing (aid permitted).

- Citizenship of the United States
- Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and a Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.
- Meets physical standards.
- English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) is required prior to assuming clinical duties.
- Candidates must meet threshold criteria/qualifications for Credentialing and Privileges of the PVAMC.
Note: GRANDFATHERING PROVISIONS. Effective with the issuance of this new qualification standard all PA's are required to have a Bachelor's Degree and maintain certification. For employees who do not meet all the basic requirements required in this standard, but who met the qualifications applicable to the position at the time they were appointed to it, the following provisions apply: VA HANDBOOK 5005/78 SEPTEMBER 5, 2014 PART II APPENDIX G8
a. PAs on VA rolls prior to the implementation date of this standard who do not meet the minimum academic level of a Bachelor's degree are exempted from this requirement.
b. PAs on VA rolls prior to March 12, 1993 who are not NCCPA certified remain exempt from the NCCPA certification requirement. However, a PA who subsequently became or becomes certified is no longer exempt and must maintain certification as a condition of employment.
c. PAs who have been grandfathered and subsequently leave the PA occupation lose the grandfathered status and must meet the full VA qualification standard requirements in effect at the time of reentry to the PA occupation, unless a waiver is approved by the Under Secretary for Health.
