Incumbent provides legal and technical support to Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) attorneys and paralegal specialists in the processing of entitlement cases pursuant to Titles II, XVI and XVIII of the Social Security Act, as amended. Incumbent is responsible for the processing of a hearing case from its receipt in the office to its completion, independently performing a wide range of case development actions. Examines assigned hearing cases containing a wide variety of medical and legal documentation to ensure sufficiency of evidence or documentation. The incumbent will analyze documentary evidence and identifies the need for additional evidence from Disability Determination Services (DDS), (i.e. state agencies), physicians, hospitals, SSA District Offices, etc. Identifies and resolves discrepancies and/or deficiencies in case development. Prepares case summaries. Selects pertinent exhibits to be included in the case record. Recommends dismissals of cases not meeting legal and regulatory requirements. Analyzes post-hearing medical development, identifies conflicts within the record, and recommends further medical or vocational development of the case. Performs technical research for ALJs, staff attorneys and paralegal specialists. Composes complex and/or technical correspondence. Communicates orally on a daily basis with attorneys, lay representatives, claimants, Congressional offices, and other third parties to answer questions relating to the hearing process. Discusses individual cases and reviews exhibits with claimants, lay representatives and attorneys prior to the hearing. Sets up hearing room and equipment. Assures that all evidence and testimony presented at the hearing is complete and recorded.

COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience and education as described above may be combined to meet the minimum qualification requirements.
GS-5: Education course work equivalent to a baccalaureate program beyond the second year (e.g., in excess of the first 60 earned semester or 90 earned quarter hours) is creditable toward meeting the minimum qualification requirements.
Note: Experience and education will be computed as percentages of the overall requirements and must equal to 100 percent when combined. Example: Three years of college coursework plus 6 months specialized experience is qualifying for the GS-5 level.
