A vacancy exists as a Safe Patient Handling & Mobility (SPHM) Staff Nurse in Safety Service at the Dayton VA Medical Center. This SPHM Nurse is responsible for developing, implementing, maintaining, and continuous evaluation of the hospital's Safe Patient Handling & Mobility Program. This includes a large amount of hands on training provided to Nursing staff and the Unit Peer Leaders on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift. Additionally, duties include, identification, purchasing, and oversight of equipment needed to meet current and future needs of the program. The SPHM Nurse will identify patterns and trends in SPHM program for local and network wide performance improvement.
The SPHM Nurse will collect, analyze, and trend SPHM data to initiate system changes based on current concepts. The SPHM will provide coverage in the Occupational Health Clinic as directed by the Supervisor.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. Tour of duty may change depending on the needs of the Service and for hands on training purposes on other shifts.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride GSA vehicles.
