About the Position:
This position is with the Acoustics Division of the U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) at Fort Rucker, Alabama. USAARL is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Material Command, MRMC. The incumbent will conduct auditory and acoustics research in support of mission critical programs, and will develop analysis tools that are fundamental to collecting data needed to support congressionally mandated projects.
Fort Rucker is the Home of Army Aviation and is located in the southeast Alabama area known as the Wiregrass; much of the main post is in Dale County, an area with many lakes and streams, and the Gulf of Mexico, offering some of the best beaches in the world, is within driving distance.
This is a contingent (TERM) appointment Not-To-Exceed 2 years. Individuals selected for this TERM position may be eligible for conversion to a career-conditional appointment at a later date. To be converted, the employee must (1) have been selected for the contingent position under competitive procedures, (2) must have served 2 years of substantially continuous service in the contingent appointment, (3) be selected under merit promotion 2procedures for the permanent position, and (4) have a current rating of "B" or better.
This is a TERM appointment Not-To-Exceed 2 years that may be extended to maximum of 5 Years. MRMC Command is authorized to extend a contingent appointment one additional year.
USAARL participates in an alternative personnel system known as the Personnel Demonstration Project (PDP). The DB-02 payband is equivalent to the GS-05, Step 01 to GS-12, Step 10 level. For this vacancy, management has elected to recruit at the higher end of the payband (GS-09, Step 01, $49,765 to GS-12, Step 10, $93,821). In keeping with the Demonstration pay fixing policies, employees earning a salary that falls within this payband equivalent, will not receive an immediate pay increase (promotion) if appointed to this position. Future pay increases within the payband will be accomplished through the pay for performance management system.

BASIC REQUIREMENT
Four-year degree in professional engineering. To be acceptable, the curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

Current registration as a professional engineer by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico.
OR
Evidence of having successfully passed the Engineer-In-Training (EIT) examination, or the written test required for professional registration, which is administered by the Boards of Engineering Examiners in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
OR
Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in first paragraph above.
OR
Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g. physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering, provided the applicant has at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION
One year of specialized experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS-07) requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. Candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate in their resume that they possess specialized experience which involves: (1) Experience applying engineering theories and concepts to auditory and acoustic research; (2) Experience developing theoretical or experimental means of investigating noise hazards; (3) Experience managing acquisition programs and (4)Experience and/or academic training in occupational noise exposure risks applicable to functioning in aviation mounted and dismounted activities.
