The Clinical Social Worker is assigned to Social Work Service and performs duties in the Primary Care Clinics at the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center. The position is located in Spokane, Washington; Coeur d' Alene, Idaho; and/or Wenatchee, Washington. The incumbent must use a high level of skill in assessing and treating the complicated psychosocial problems of Veterans. Social Work responsibilities include the assessment of psychosocial problems, crisis intervention and include the provision of short-term, solution-focused counseling with Veterans and/or their family members/significant others. Referrals typically originate from members of the interdisciplinary team, from Veterans and/or their family members/significant others coming as walk-ins to seek assistance, and from community professionals. The incumbent must complete thorough assessments to determine the presenting problem to determine in-home factors impacting the problem and to determine obstacles to treatment and/or follow through with recommended treatments. Consultation with members of the outpatient interdisciplinary team is provided in order to coordinate a collaborative effort to meet the agreed upon goals for the Veteran's treatment needs and include liaison with community professionals regarding needed services for Veterans and/or their families. Working with various patient populations include, but are not limited to, homeless Veterans, Hospice Services, Community Living Center, Home Health services, Women Veterans, financial resources, VA benefits, and transportation services. Complete an assessment of the Veteran in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the Veteran, family members and significant others.

Physical Requirements:
The incumbent may sit and stand for periods of time to provide patient care. The incumbent may be required to lift materials under 40 pounds. The incumbent is required to access a computer and use a keyboard (e.g. to chart notes and make reports). The incumbent works in a clinic, office and hospital environment. The incumbent may be required to work an irregular tour of duty and/or on weekends as the need arises. This may be temporary, intermittent, or in an ongoing manner. The incumbent may be detailed or reassigned to meet the needs of the SWS work assignments, when deemed necessary by the Chief, SWS.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP
EDUCATION: Earned a Master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the Master's degree in social work. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED).
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
LICENSURE: Individuals assigned as a Social Worker case manager must be licensed or certified at the Independent Practice Level (CAPSW) by the state at the master's degree level. If not yet licensed proof of pending licensing paperwork must be provided. (Copy of license or certification required).

GS-9 GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Less than one year of post-MSW experience and not yet licensed or certified at the independent practice level and demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
KSA 1: Ability to provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds. This requires knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological), and the differential influences of the environment, society, and culture.
KSA 2: Ability to work with patients and families who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems utilizing individual, group, and family counseling skills. Work with more complex problems is done under close supervision. With guidance from the social work supervisor, ability to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members, and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needs.
KSA 3: Basic knowledge of psychosocial treatment modalities and, under supervision, ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups to achieve treatment goals. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving, or crisis intervention techniques.
KSA 4: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with people from varied backgrounds.
KSA 5: Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic, and traumatic illnesses/injuries; common medications and their effects/side effects; and medical terminology.
KSA 6: Basic skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking. Ability to learn and utilize software programs in use by the Veterans Administration.
GS-11 GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Completion of a minimum of 1 year of post-MSW degree experience in the field of health care social work (VA or non-VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. OR Doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required 1 year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities to qualify for this
position at the GS-11 level:
KSA 1: Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services.
KSA 2: Ability to independently assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient's problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills and assistance needed, in collaboration with the patient, family and interdisciplinary treatment team.

KSA 7: Ability to provide consultation services to other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Ability to provide orientation and coaching to new social workers and social work graduate students. Ability to serve as a field instructor for social work graduate students who are completing VHA field placements.
KSA 8: Ability to independently evaluate his/her own practice through participation in professional peer review case conferences, research studies, or other organized means.
KSA 9: Knowledge and skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking, especially those programs in use by VHA.
