The Primary Care Service of the VA St. Louis Health Care System is currently seeking full-time Family Practice or Internal Medicine trained physicians. Primary Care staff physicians are responsible for providing care to a panel of patients to manage under PCMM guidelines. Incumbent must promote, maintain and nurture positive relationships with the goal of efficient healthcare delivery where each team member works at the top of his or her practice. The incumbent is expected to be attentive to patient education and preventive care and be able to work well in an interdisciplinary team to provide high quality primary care.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be responsible for providing comprehensive medical care by performing duties to include, but not limited to the following:
Collaborates with a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) to provide accessible, comprehensive, coordinated, continuous care to an assigned panel of patients;
Performs a variety of disease prevention related activities including gender and age specific screenings (e.g. breast and colorectal cancer), mental health screenings (e.g. depression, substance use& abuse, military sexual trauma and PTSD) and health promotion activities including immunizations, weight management and exercise counseling;
Screens for, evaluates and treats uncomplicated common mental health disorders, including depression and common addictions, with referrals made to mental health providers for further evaluation and treatment as appropriate;
Primary care physicians will have responsibility for supervision of or collaboration with primary care mid-level providers. Physicians are expected to provide clinical oversight and to participate in peer review of other primary care providers through periodic chart reviews.
Facility/Area Information:
The VA St. Louis Health Care System is a two-division tertiary care facility providing inpatient and ambulatory care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry, neurology, spinal cord injury, and rehabilitation, as well as 65 subspecialty areas. There are 218 hospital operating beds, a 71 bed Community Living Center, a 50 bed Rehabilitation Domiciliary for Homeless Veterans and a 25 bed Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program. This medical center services veterans and their families in east central Missouri and southwestern Illinois. The John Cochran Division is located in midtown St. Louis and is in close proximity to its affiliated medical schools, Saint Louis University and Washington University. It houses the medical center's operative surgical capabilities, the ambulatory care unit, and a six-story Clinical Addition that includes the surgical facilities, intensive care units, and the clinical laboratory. The Jefferson Barracks Division is a multi-building complex situated in south St. Louis County. It provides psychiatric treatment, regional spinal cord injury treatment, a nursing home care unit, geriatric health care, outpatient clinic, rehabilitation services, a domiciliary for homeless veterans and a newly opened Fisher House. VA St. Louis utilizes an electronic medical record. This medical center also maintains Community Based Outpatient Clinics and Annexes in St. Charles, MO, Belleville, IL, Washington, MO, St. Louis City, and Florissant, MO.
Work Schedule: Typical work hours are Monday through Friday 8:00am-4:30pm, schedules may vary depending on clinic location and position hired for. May include evenings and/or weekend hours in order to provide extended clinic coverage. (Physician are on call 24/7/365).
Functional Statement Title/#: Staff Physician, Primary Care
Physical requirements: include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: lifting of up to 10 lbs., sitting (4 hours), standing (2 hours), walking (2 hours), bending/stooping (1 hour), twisting (1/2 hour), simple grasping (4 hours), fine manipulation (6 hours), reaching above the shoulder (1/2 hour), and operating machinery (1/2 hour).
