The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to (10) temporary positions at Big Cypress National Preserve and Everglades National Park, Florida. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. The Homestead area features islands of pine forests, hardwood hammocks and freshwater glades. Popular recreational activities include wildlife viewing, bird watching, hiking, slogging, camping and bike riding. The area offers visitors numerous nature trails, including the famous Anhinga Trail with excellent wildlife viewing, and a 112-site campground. The district is located 10 miles southwest of Homestead, Florida, and 35 miles from Miami. Nearby Biscayne Bay and the Florida keys offer boating, fishing and diving opportunities. Loop Road is located 60 miles from Everglades National Park Headquarters and is approximately 25 miles west of Miami, located on Tamiami Trail/Route 41.
There is no public transit available to any areas of the park. Winter temperatures average between 66 and 80 degrees. Evening temperatures can dip down into the 50s or occasionally 40s. Summer temperatures average between 85 and 92 degrees with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and high humidity. Evening temperatures are rarely lower than 75 degrees. Warm mild weather makes the area perfect habitat for venomous animals, poisonous plants and stinging or biting insects. Mosquito levels are lower during the winter season.

The incumbent will be working in a team setting to provide educational opportunities to students. He/she researches, prepares, and presents curriculum-based environmental education programs to 4th-6th grade students from urban areas and surrounding communities. Additional interpretive programs may include, but are not limited to, off site school and community programs and special in-park programs for adults and students. The incumbent will be asked to assist in various aspects of program administration. This will include writing and developing curriculum materials, providing assistance during teacher workshops, preparing facilities for use, fulfilling special program requests, and generating program documents.
At the GS-07 level the incumbent must be able to train, influence, and motivate co-workers and volunteers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
Applicants must possess a valid state driver's license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader, work in a park, recreation or conservation area, environmental education, history and/or cultural resources education, and natural sciences education. Work will include independent research and presentation. -OR- B. You must possess one full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation. One year of full time graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours. -OR- C. Equivalent combinations of education and experience.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. In order to receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the number of hours worked per week.
Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
