Serve as a Biologist with responsibility for the design aspects and operational testing of biological detection instrumentation and bio-agent assay development for bio-agent assay development for military field use. Works closely with engineers to develop integrated detection systems. Designs and conducts immunological and nucleic acid assay development for bio-agents. Conducts initial and continuing testing on bread broad prototype and non-developmental items, systems and sub-assemblies. Mates work in assay development to the bio-sensors being tested, evaluates experimental data, improves the process, re-tests, and recommends assay improvements. Selects and specifies technical equipment required to accomplish assignments. Assists project officer on large development contracts with prime responsibility for various assay and bio-sensor aspects

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. (Transcripts are required at the time of application).

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Specialized Experience Required: In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirement Qualified Candidates for the discipline identified above must ALSO identify in their resume that they possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level/pay band (GS-11) in the federal service that demonstrates the following: (1) Designing and conducting immunological and nucleic acid assay development for bio-agents; (2) Designing prototype bio-sensor evaluations for the detection of biological agents, such as laboratory samples, aerosols, and ground or surface contamination; (3) Evaluates experimental data for procedure modifications and system parameters, in order to re-tests and recommends subsequent detection approaches.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
