The APRN in the Mental Health Clinic is responsible for managing patients with acute and/or chronic mental illness. Management is achieved through structured diagnostic and clinical assessments, treatment planning, implementation, collaboration and evaluation to meet the needs of patients. the APRN provides clinical management of a variety of complex mental health conditions, including, but not limited to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, and other related conditions. Treatment focuses on utilization of pharmacological interventions as well as appropriate referral for additional evaluation and/or adjunctive psychosocial interventions. Treatment also involves informing patients of risks, benefits, and alternative treatments and answering all questions. the APRN will provide consultation to Veterans' families/caregivers as well as other licensed independent practitioners and professional staff on the assessment, education, and treatment of Veterans with complex clinical problems. Position requires a working knowledge of advanced psychopharmacology, substance abuse treatment, and psychotherapy. In collaboration with the treatment team, the APRN selects appropriate interventions from a variety of resources and clinical approaches including evidenced based psychotherapies, psychosocial support, family therapy, and medication management. The APRN promotes self-care and enlists the participation of patients in establishing realistic health goals. In addition to providing direct patient care, the APRN also provides patient and family teaching; staff education; consults and collaborates with other health care providers; participates in nursing research and training; prescribes medications and adjunctive modalities; refers patients; and participates on Medical Center committees or task groups. this position requires knowledge of medical terminology, diagnostic categories, and chart review. activities as CPR and psychiatric intervention at a unit-specific level.
Emotional Demands: Many emotional demands are made upon an employee of a psychiatric hospital. The employee will be required to maintain composure and a calm demeanor at all times. Employees will exhibit an unbiased and non-judgmental attitude in working, with patients/ residents/ families and significant others as well as with interdisciplinary staff.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Nurse Practitioners:
A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body.
