This position serves as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department in one of two Indian Health Service Hospitals located at either Claremore or Lawton, Oklahoma. This position reports to the Supervisory Clinical Nurse in charge in the Emergency Department.
Facilities: The two Oklahoma City Area Hospitals located in Claremore, OK and Lawton, OK range from 25-50 beds. Full services are available at all the hospitals including general medicine and surgery, pediatrics, and outpatient service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks:
GS-5: Completion of a program of at least 30 months' duration or 4 academic years above high school or bachelor's degree; OR Completion of a program of less than 30 months' duration or associate degree, and 1 year of professional nursing, or practical nurse or nursing assistant experience (of at least GS-4 level work in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector) under the supervision of a professional nurse. Professional nursing experience at this level is performed under the direct supervision of an RN and participating in nursing duties such as: the development and implementation of a plan of care for assigned patients; providing nursing interventions based on established plan of care and evaluating effectiveness.
GS-7: 1 full year of graduate education or bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement; OR Completion of a professional nursing program and 1 year of nursing experience (equivalent to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector). Experience at this level is performed under general supervision and work is reviewed periodically by another RN. Performs duties such as: assessing and caring for the nursing needs of patients and other types of patients as assigned; developing plans of care to meet the needs of assigned patients; recognizing adverse signs and symptoms and reacting swiftly in emergency situations; basic knowledge of triaging patients.
GS-9: 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's or equivalent degree; OR 1 year of nursing experience (equivalent to at least the GS-7 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector). Experience at this level performs duties such as: assessing and caring for the nursing needs of ER patients and other types of patients as assigned; developing plans of care to meet the needs of assigned patients; recognizing adverse signs and symptoms and reacting swiftly in emergency situations; basic knowledge of triaging patients; planning with minimal assistance in scheduling and providing comprehensive nursing care in the Emergency Department.
GS-10: 1 year of nursing experience (equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector). Experience at this level performs duties such as: providing nursing care, triaging patients, recognizing and intervening in acute life-threatening situations, cardiac and respiratory failure management in medical, surgical, and obstetrical patients in the emergency room; interpreting data about the patient's status in order to identify the patient care needed; independently planning, scheduling and providing comprehensive nursing care in the Emergency Department.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable.
SELECTIVE FACTOR: In addition to the qualification requirements for the OPM and IHS Excepted Service Qualifications described above, to be rated basically qualified for this position, candidates must possess current, valid, active, unrestricted professional nursing license as a professional nurse from any State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. New graduates must also possess this licensure as indicated with no grace period allowed.
The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain licensure requirements. If licensure requirements are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
EVALUATION OF EDUCATION:
At the GS-5 level, successfully completed undergraduate course work in nursing; the behavioral, physical, or biological sciences related to nursing; nutrition; public health; and maternal and child health in excess of that required for completion of an associate degree may be substituted for professional nursing experience at the rate of 1 academic year for 9 months of experience.
Graduate-level education (at the GS-7/9 levels) must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.
Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
This position has promotion potential to the GS-10 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval.
