Incumbent serves as an Infection Prevention Nurse for the Infection Control program and is an expert in infection prevention and control. The duties of the Infection Prevention Nurse include, but are not limited to overseeing/performing surveillances for healthcare-associated pathogens, representing the Infection Control Program at various committee meetings, providing guidance to healthcare workers in how to prevent transmission of infectious diseases and investigating outbreaks for VACCHCS. The Infection Prevention Nurse creates, modifies and revises infection control policies and procedures according to current standards of practice, and has expert knowledge related to CDC, OSHA, APIC, NIOSH, AORN, EPA and other regulatory bodies. The Infection Prevention Nurse develops implements, directs and evaluates the multiple facets of the VACCHCS Infection Control program. She/he leads an evidence-based to ensure that compliance to regulatory agencies (i.e. Joint Commission, Office of the Inspector General and the Medical Inspector) are met. The Infection Prevention Nurse is accountable to direct and evaluate infection control activities in all clinical and non-clinical services in VACCHCS. She/he is an integral component of the Quality Management Program.
Meeting these responsibilities will require strong skills in: the leading of both large and small interdisciplinary groups seeking systems improvement outcomes; teaching; writing; chart review; data extraction; evaluation and trending; electronica data reporting, including development of spreadsheets, tables and graphs; project management skills; presentation development; priority-setting and critical thinking skills. The incumbent will have knowledge of evaluation techniques and their application to the VACCHCS setting, including a general knowledge of processes utilized in: problem identification, prioritization, analyses, leading change, displaying data to facilitate the understanding of potential/actual issues, translating data into information, research, data mining, and program evaluation.

May occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative, secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
· U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
· Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
· The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
· Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Preferred Experience: Preferred candidates will have 5-10 years of clinical nursing experience and performance improvement/quality management experience.

volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps,
AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic;
religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical
competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and
experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying
experience, including volunteer experience.
