This position is located at the Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC), in either Frederick, MD or in the Albright Training Center in Grand Canyon National Park, and is administered under the Associate Director for Workforce Relevancy and Inclusion (WRI), through the Division of Learning and Development. The HPTC's mission is to provide preservation trades training for the maintenance workers of the NPS. The majority of the HPTC preservation trade training is accomplished by preservation project work performed for the NPS and other federal agencies and state governments.
This appointment is seasonal and is limited to 1039 hours during a six month period time. Due to the temporary nature of this appointment, you may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years, and/or extension if workload and funding allow, without further competition. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.

As a Maintenance Worker (Preservationist) in historic preservation, you will perform a variety of trade tasks often combining trade practices such as carpentry, wood crafting, roofing, masonry, and painting. These tasks are performed in a variety of work environments, including historic and/or contemporary buildings, features, structures, or on large exterior or interior objects. Work may also include elements of new construction and/or demolition. In addition to performing the various trade work, incumbent initiates basic procurement actions under the direction of a higher graded worker by ordering supplies and materials required in day-to-day work. Operates motor vehicles for transportation of self, other workers, supplies and equipment to and from work site and periodically use other equipment such as forklifts, bobcats, aerial lifts, etc. during the performance of work. Responsible for the care and maintenance of all tools and personal protective equipment issued. Responsible for keeping tools used in clean, safe, and good working order. Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established national,and local bureau safety regulations and programs; maintains a safe and clean working environment; uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. Contributes to the achievement of essential competencies in the field of preservation skills and craft career fields for HPTC and partners through an exchange of skills and ideas via participation in formal workshops, seminars, trade expositions, and one-on-one training.
