The chaplains provide complete religious ministry to Veterans and support for family members. Duties include:
Conducting Protestant worship services
Determining patients' desire for spiritual care and performing spiritual assessments as appropriate to be included in interdisciplinary care planning
Locating other medical center staff chaplains or clergy from the community to meet Veteran patient needs that he or she cannot meet.
Participating actively on interdisciplinary teams/groups and committees to assure that the religious and spiritual dimensions of health and wellness are addressed in all aspects of the Medical Center's holistic patient care.
Assisting Veteran patients, providers and treatment teams in translating religious/spiritual values into effective living.
Assessing religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical problems of Veteran patients and plans and provides appropriate ministration, including individual in-depth spiritual health ministry.
Providing, as appropriate, extensive and intensive spiritual health care and counseling to individual patients.
Providing counsel and spiritual support to relatives of Veteran patients in difficult and trying situations to alleviate their anxieties, to foster effective cooperation of these relatives with the treatment regimen of the medical center, and to help them deal with grief.
Cooperating with and participating in community organizations and activities in order to assist in integrating the functions of the Medical Center into the larger community.
Providing counsel when requested by Veteran patients on medical ethical issues, such as advance directives, in the context of the patient's particular faith background.
Ensuring that Veteran patients have opportunities for free exercise of religion and protecting them from proselytizing from any source.
Communicating effectively with persons of diverse races, cultures, religions, nationalities, ages, and persons having varying types and degrees of disability, in order to understand and address their specific needs.
Documenting Veteran patient's assessments, treatment, and ministry in electronic records systems.

Education: A Master of Divinity from an accredited institution or the equivalent. Equivalent education is a bachelor's degree (of at least 120 semester hours) from an accredited institution plus at least 70 graduate semester hours which included all of the following: at least 20 semester hours in pastoral ministry; 20 semester hours in any combination of theology, ethics, and philosophy of religion; 20 semester hours in the study of sacred writings, including the study of languages in which sacred writings are written; and 10 semester hours in religious history and/or world religions.
Clinical Pastoral Education: In addition to the education requirement, applicants must have completed at least 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) [as defined by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE)]. 800 hours of supervised ministry in a formal training program which incorporated both ministry formation and pastoral care skills development will be considered for equivalency to the required CPE.
Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work can help build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Three years of ministry experience is required. At least two years of this experience must have followed completion of the Master of Divinity or equivalent education. Experience during graduate education may count for up to one year of the three years of required experience. One year of the experience must have demonstrated all of the following:
(a) ability to serve as a consultant or expert to a multidisciplinary treatment team;
(b) in-depth knowledge of related professional fields, particularly in the behavioral sciences;
(c) understanding of, and ability to respond to, the particular concerns and issues pertaining to treatment of veterans;
(d) knowledge of the structure, regulations, practices, and programs of healthcare delivery systems;
(e) ability to interpret and apply a body of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in professional practice;
(f) ability to develop and maintain liaisons with a variety of outside organizations.
*Completion of a doctoral degree directly related to pastoral ministry may be substituted for one year of this experience, unless the doctoral degree is used to satisfy the "equivalent education" as described above. Part time experience is prorated in comparison to 40 hours per week to determine its length.
