Substitute teachers present instruction in accordance with an established lesson plan and curriculum to students in a classroom environment. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Tutors are advocates and role models for the students, responsible for reporting student progress to the teacher. They tutor students individually or in small groups, review the students notes, entertain questions and discussions, determine the concepts which need to be reviewed, work with students in any phase of the writing process, and correct students work.

Best qualified candidates are defined as:
- Applicants who possess a baccalaureate degree from an institution accredited by a regional accrediting association which includes 18 semester hours of course work in the field of professional teacher education;
- Applicants who possess a baccalaureate degree in any major;
Highly Qualified candidates are defined as:
- Applicants who possess an associate degree or has completed 60 semester hours;
If necessary, selection may be made based on minimum qualification requirement. The minimum qualification is a high school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma (GED).
Transcripts: An electronic photocopy of all OFFICIAL college/university transcripts (front and back) must be submitted. To receive the maximum allowable credit you must include all transcripts (front and back) for each degree earned to include any additional courses currently in progress. Any transcripts submitted that are not in English or not official will be removed from the application and will not be considered. (Transcripts must be in English.)
Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Payment of travel and transportation expenses, LQA, and PA are not authorized.
NOTE: Applicants must be living within the local commuting area of the location/school they indicated interest in; or be on PCS orders to the respective location.
Citizenship/Ordinarily Resident Status: Applicants must be U.S. citizens who are not considered Ordinarily Resident under the applicable Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).
An ordinarily resident cannot be appointed. An ordinarily resident is anyone who has lived in the host country longer than the allowed number of days without being a member of the forces assigned, civilian component or a family member of either the aforementioned or who has obtained a work permit for any duration. Ordinarily Resident restrictions apply and vary depending on the host nation.
Dual citizens will not be appointed to positions within the country in which they hold dual citizenship. Citizenship eligibility will be verified prior to appointment
Substitute teachers/AVID tutors work only when actually needed, and have no guaranteed tour of duty.
Substitute teachers may work no more than 90 consecutive days in a continuing full-time or part-time position with a prescheduled tour of duty.
Federal employees must participate in Direct Deposit/Electronic Fund Transfer in accordance with DOD Regulation 7000.14R.
