The Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS) is seeking a physician that is board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine with subspecialty board certification or board eligibility in Pulmonology/Critical Care Medicine to practice as an Intensivist in the Gulf Coast Veteran Health Care System (GCVHCS) in Biloxi, MS. The incumbent would be part of the Pulmonary/Critical Care Department within the Medicine Service. The incumbent would work in the ICU providing expert care for critically ill patients. In addition, the Physician would rotate with the other Pulmonary/Critical Care Physicians in providing expert consultation and treatment to patients in the outpatient Pulmonary Clinic, and also the inpatient setting. In this role, the incumbent will provide feedback and patient education to the patients and their families and demonstrate excellence in all facets of patient care and meet or exceed compliance standards.
He or she will perform the following functions: Evaluate, diagnose, treat, consult, and order appropriate diagnostic studies for Pulmonary/Critical Care patients. The ideal candidate should be proficient at bronchoscopies, intubations, and other procedures frequently performed by Pulmonary/Critical Care Physicians. The incumbent would on occasion precept residents and fellows and provide daily consultative services and feedback during the morning Surgery Grand Rounds. The ideal candidate is expected to participate and chair committees to improve quality and patient satisfaction.
The incumbent will provide consultative services on patients referred from other sections of the hospital and/or affiliated VA outpatient clinics, and perform administrative functions and other tasks as assigned by the Chief of the Medicine Service. The incumbent is expected to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and treatment of disease. The ideal candidate should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills that enable them to establish and maintain professional relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team. The incumbent is expected to adhere to stated policies and agency mandates and to provide timely documentation of clinical notes (e.g. H&P, consult review, discharge summaries, medication reconciliation, etc.). In addition, the incumbent is expected to coordinate and communicate the treatment plan of patients with Hospitalists, primary care providers, nursing, social workers, clerical staff, pharmacists and other subspecialists and ancillary staff. The ideal candidate will help to ensure that high quality patient care is delivered in a resourceful and efficient manner.
Work Schedule: Generally 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (plus shared call schedule).
Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; Emotional and Mental Stability; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking 1 hours; Both eyes required; Working alone.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)
English Language Proficiency. Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research or academic position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidates credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area. (See chapter 3, section B, paragraph 14 of this part, on waiver of licensure provisions.)
Licensure and Registration. (1) Physicians (Except Residents). Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.
(2) Residents. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia before the second year of VA residency, or meet any licensure, registration or other equivalent requirements established for residents of non-VA hospitals with which the VA facility is affiliated for training purposes. The resident must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
(3) Impaired Licensure. A physician who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions of chapter 3, section B, paragraph 14 of this part.
(4) Waiver of Licensure. Licensure may be waived by the Under Secretary for Health or designee in Central Office for individuals in research or academic assignments involving no direct patient care responsibilities in accordance with current regulations.
First-Year Residency (Internship). Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidates acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, or
(2) Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Board certified or board eligible in Critical Care.
