Major Duties:
The Philadelphia VA Medical Center seeks an experienced Primary Care physician to perform diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic services to the veteran population. The physician is responsible for managing the full spectrum of primary care responsibilities including admission from an outpatient site, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment, consultation for patients presenting with general medicine complaints and diseases. To manage primary care patients the following will be necessary: ordering appropriate lab work, ordering appropriate diagnostic tests, requesting consultations to specialty services, providing appropriate follow-up care, and referral of patients with non-medicine complaints, diseases, and injuries to appropriate disciplines for diagnosis and treatment.
The physician will work in a team setting with other physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, and support staff assigned to perform duties to accomplish the treatment of veteran patients. Computer skills are essential as the Philadelphia VA Medical Center is fully computerized for note documentation, entering orders and requesting consults.
Physician may be required to work at more than one PVAMC site (i.e., combination of the PVAMC and the community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). May be required to work extended hours or on a weekend if the clinic is open during these non-administrative hours.
Performs the following tasks during the clinic visit: Reviews information from outside providers, conducts history and physical exams, assesses patients clinical condition, formulates treatment plans, completes provider-specific clinical reminders, reviews test and procedure results, completes patient referrals in CPRS, manages patients medication (including medicine reconciliation), and gives medical and lifestyle advice and counseling.
Performs the following direct patient care responsibilities when patient is not present: completes view alerts, follows-up on patient-related information (test and procedure results, consults and medications), calls patients and family on the telephone sends and receives secure messages from patients, discusses cases with consultants and with PACT team, reviews and acts on non-VA medical records, and completes forms/paperwork.
May also perform the following as directed by Associate Chief of Staff (Service Chief): supervises and trains medical students, residents and other learners; conducts clinical research studies; involvement in quality management and patient safety involving primary care; and data analysis related to primary care clinical operations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. 3. Must possess and maintain current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
4. Must be board certified or board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice.
5. Meet the physical standards outlined in VA Directive and Handbook 5019. This will be evidenced by completion of a pre-employment physical.
6. As this a direct patient care position, physician selected must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7407(d).
7. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
