These positions oversee a multifaceted protection operation that encompasses visitor services, law enforcement, criminal investigations, emergency medical services, search and rescue initiatives, structural and wildland firefighting, aviation operations, and activities related to wilderness programs, as well as resource monitoring and protection.
The positions provide policy guidance and direction for various visitor and resource protection program activities within the assigned district. They entail direct interaction with a diverse range of agencies and organizations, including representatives from local, state, federal, and tribal governments. The incumbents will have comprehensive supervisory responsibilities, which include managing Equal Opportunity and Employee Relations for seasonal, temporary, permanent, VIP, and other personnel, both directly and indirectly.
The Marine and Wahweap districts oversee programs related to law enforcement, structural and wildland fire management, emergency medical services, and search and rescue operations. Covering approximately 215,000 acres of Lake Powell and slick rock terrain, the elevation ranges from 3,500 to 5,000 feet. Selected candidates will be expected to acquire and maintain the skills necessary for operating an ambulance, high-performance patrol boats, and 4x4 vehicles suitable for patrolling some of the most technically demanding roads within the park system. Primary responsibilities during the warmer months will focus on water activities, transitioning to both water and backcountry operations during the shoulder seasons. The ideal candidates should be comfortable working independently and hiking in rugged terrain.

Lees Ferry, AZ Area Information: Lees Ferry district of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is located in Northwest Arizona, approximately 50 (driving) miles south of Page and 125 miles North of Flagstaff at an elevation of 3,300 feet. Temperatures range from approximately 110 degrees in the summer to 17 degrees in the winter. Page has schools K-12, a daycare center, post office, general store, banking facilities, churches, a recreation center, an urgent care and hospital and several restaurants. The park community consists of some 5-10 people, including employees of the NPS and their family members. There are limited employment opportunities for family members in the park and surrounding areas. Complete shopping, educational, medical and professional services are available in Page and Flagstaff. Recreational opportunities abound in the greater 2 hour area include hiking, river rafting, boating, canyoneering, fishing, cross-country skiing, and golfing in nearby communities.
Page, AZ Area Information: Page, Arizona is located on the Arizona-Utah border, 135 miles north of Flagstaff, Arizona, the nearest larger community. Page looks out on beautiful Lake Powell which offers boating, associated water sports recreation and fishing. The surrounding land of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area offers beautiful red rock country for hiking and backcountry recreational activity. Page is centrally located to many other National Parks, such as the Grand Canyon, Zion, Arches and Canyonlands to name a few. Page offers normal community amenities such as shopping, medical and dental facilities, schools K-12 and college courses available through local Coconino Community College. The area enjoys typical high desert climate with temperatures ranging from 100 in summer to mid-teens in winter with low humidity and sunshine most days of the year. Elevation in Page is 4300 feet above sea level.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work involving patrol duties, responding to emergency incidents, or performing resource management duties is performed outdoors in environments ranging from desert to pinion-juniper forest. Temperatures vary from summer highs of over 120 degrees Fahrenheit to winter lows of minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Hazardous terrain including rugged, unstable footing, exposure to extreme heights, loose rock, and swift river currents and rapids, is frequently encountered. The duties performed are often physically and emotionally stressful and may extend into hours well beyond the scheduled duty day. Operations may sometimes be performed at night adding darkness to the complexity of the environment.
