The selectee will be assigned to a remote work site to provide assistance to the visitor services and resource protection division. The incumbent will operate a motorboat to conduct campground patrols or to access remote areas for foot patrols, provide emergency medical services, perform search and rescue operations, provide information regarding Federal, park, and state regulations, provide visitor information, resource education, and assistance, perform minor maintain campgrounds and associated facilities as well, as assist with issuance of permits and collection of park recreation fees on a needed basis.
Isle Royale National Park is a large, remote and isolated island in northwestern Lake Superior. Isle Royale is located approximately 70 miles north of the park's administrative headquarters in Houghton, MI. Isle Royale is 99% federally designated Wilderness, with numerous lakes and native wildlife such as moose and wolves, the park offers a superb setting for recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, hiking and more. The incumbent will be stationed on the island. There are no roads, no cell phone coverage, limited amenities and limited opportunity to travel to the mainland. Internet access for personal business on government computers is permitted during non-business hours. Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly or bi-weekly depending on the incumbent's specific duty station on the island. To protect Isle Royale's wildlife from disease and other illnesses, pets are prohibited. Training Provided for the following: Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC), 24 hours EMT CE or Refresher hours, 8-hour wildland firefighter refresher as needed. Incumbent will gain significant small boat handling experience and may have opportunities to gain large (27-31') boat handling experience to include marine electronics, reduced visibility night and fog navigation, towing.

Physical Demands: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, and the incumbent must have the ability to routinely carry backpacks of up to 50 pounds in steep terrain and in adverse weather conditions.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in a setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, or adverse weather conditions.
