This Merit Promotion position is open to Current Federal Employees and Former Federal Employees with permanent status or reinstatement eligibility. Applicants MUST have a valid driver's license with at least a Class A CDL with airbrake and kingpin tow endorsements. In accordance with the Smithsonian Institution's Drug and Alcohol Testing and Medical Examinations for Commercial Drivers Program, tentative selectees must pass a drug test AND physical examination in order to be offered an appointment.
The selectee will be required to obtain a hazmat endorsement within the first year of employment.
Annual physical examinations are required to maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and to be certified for using a respiratory for a limited number of tasks.
An annual respirator fit testing and training is required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, crouching, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. It includes work in cramped or awkward positions on top of, under, and in tight compartments of vehicles. Strenuous work is performed while standing, lying, or sitting. The incumbent will be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds, unassisted, as well as exert similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. Lifting and moving heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes is also required, as is working from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.
Working Conditions: Duties at the Ridge telescopes and on other areas of the mountain are recurring. The environment can be extreme, and range from dry heat to bitter cold. Travel to the Ridge or higher over a mountain road an be hazardous, and involve exposure to snow and rain, lightning, and flash floods.
