You will manage and supervise the park law enforcement program in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and direct a program of education and information to decrease opportunity for crime as well as issuing warnings, citations, and when necessary, making arrests, coordinates law enforcement activities, policy matters, and contacts.
You will provide the full range of supervisory duties and responsibilities over a subordinate staff. You are responsible for planning and management of the Division of Visitor & Resource Protection according to all pertinent National Park Service, Departmental, and Executive policies and guidelines.
You will plan and direct complex technical operations related to wildland and structural fire prevention and suppression, health and safety, law enforcement, visitor recreation, search and rescue, recreational boating and other water related sports and activities, physical security for buildings and facilities, special use permits, cooperative agreements, computer operations, civil defense as related to severe weather damage, and other division-related operations.
You will direct a campground reservation system for group camping, and a Self-Service fee collection system. Assist Superintendent by meeting with dignitaries, cooperators, park neighbors, community officials, and special interest groups and by helping to prepare and negotiate Cooperative Agreements, Memorandums of Understanding, and Mutual Aid Agreements.
Physical Demands: Work is arduous and hazardous, involving emergency fire suppression field work which requires physical performance calling for above average endurance and superior conditioning. The work requires strenuous physical exertion, including carrying heavy objects, running, walking, climbing, jumping, twisting, bending, stooping, hacking through underbrush, lifting more than 50 pounds and using heavy tools for long periods of time. These duties may include occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions and over extended periods of time. The pace of the work is often dictated by the emergency situation. This position also requires some rigorous law enforcement duties for which physical fitness and qualification requirements exist (Director's Order 57). These physical fitness/qualification requirements must be met and maintained on a continuing basis. Strenuous exertion is required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, medical and related emergency activities. Lifting or carrying equipment weighing over 50 pounds, such as firefighting or search and rescue equipment is required.
Dangerous persons must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended many of whom are known to carry weapons. Prisoners must be kept under physical restraint during transport and processing. Criminal investigations often must be carried out without regard to fixed work schedules, days off, or opportunities for proper rest or nutrition. Incumbent works for long periods without a break and is on call 24 hours a day. The incumbent must pass pre-employment drug screening procedures. Must qualify to use NPS issued firearms including handguns, shotguns, and rifles in accordance with policy. Must meet all requirements regarding Departmental and Service, medical, physical, background investigation and security clearance requirements. The incumbent is required to attend and pass the NPS Basic Law Enforcement for Land Managers course as prescribed by policy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and complete a minimum of 40 hours of approved annual law enforcement refresher training
Working Conditions: Most work is performed outdoors in a forest or rangeland setting where terrain ranges from flat and swampy to steep and rocky. Terrain is often covered with thick, tangled vegetation, or a variety of trees and grasses. Temperature extremes, smoke, and dust are frequently severe. The hazardous nature of the work requires the use of protective gear and clothing (boots, hard hat, nomex clothing, gloves, etc.). Fire suppression involves risk of serious injury or death. While some work may be performed in an office setting, most of the work is performed outdoors in all kinds of weather and climatic conditions. The work is performed at various hours of the day and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Long periods of surveillance work may be required in cramped, or unpleasant locations and under unpleasant conditions. Shift work is often required. Incumbent is required to operate motor vehicles of various types, may be required to fly in small fixed-wing or rotary-wing aircraft, and may be required to operate and/or ride in small watercraft. Emergency law enforcement operations will require entry into hazardous environments; exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances; and potential exposure to infectious diseases.
There is no substitution for specialized experience at this grade.

The recreation area is located adjacent to the town of Sulphur, Oklahoma (population 6,000), 82 miles south of Oklahoma City and 140 miles north of Dallas, Texas. The towns of Ardmore and Ada, each with a population of about 25,000, are about 30 miles away. Springs, streams, and lakes in wooded and grassy hills typify the area. Elevation is 1,011 feet and the average annual rainfall is 38 inches. Summer temperatures sometimes exceed 100 degrees and winter temperatures of 20 degrees or lower are not uncommon. Both Sulphur and nearby Davis (population 3,000) have school systems with Kindergarten through Grade 12. Fully accredited colleges are available as close as 30 miles.
