As a Research Fish Biologist (Unit Leader) within the North Carolina Cooperative Research Unit, some of your specific duties will include:

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR FISH BIOLOGIST, GS-0482: Applicants must meet the following to satisfy the basic education requirement for Research Fish Biologist, all grade levels. Research Positions: Applicants must show that they have a degree with major study in biology, zoology, or biological oceanography that included at least 30 semester hours in biological and aquatic science and 15 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences. This course work must have included:
At least 15 semester hours of preparatory training in zoology beyond introductory biology or zoology in such courses as invertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology, advanced vertebrate zoology, genetics, entomology, and parasitology; and
At least 6 semester hours of training applicable to fishery biology in such subjects as fishery biology, ichthyology, limnology, oceanography, algology, planktonology, marine or fresh water ecology, invertebrate ecology, principles of fishery population dynamics, or related course work in the field of fishery biology; and
At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, or statistics.
Ph.D Requirement: In addition to meeting the basic education requirements described above, in order to receive consideration for this position, you must also possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in fisheries or a closely related field of study appropriate for this position.
To verify the Ph.D requirement, transcripts or verification from the university registrar must be submitted that clearly state: Ph.D awarded, major, and date of conferral. Failure to provide this information will result in your application receiving no further consideration.
For GS-13:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-12 level may include: serving as an independent researcher conceiving, formulating, and conducting research relevant tofisheries or ecological resources, with application to contemporary science, policy and management needs; conducting research or significantly contributing to a research team; preparing descriptive and interpretative scientific reports on the results of research activities for publication and administrative use; authoring or co-author publications, scientific journal articles, and/or other products of considerable importance to the research situation; attending scientific and interagency meetings to present personal research results and exchange information within the scientific community; reviewing manuscripts and proposals of other scientists; and working with other scientists on technical issues related to the research assignment.
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in fishery biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service.
Examples of GS-13 level work may include: 1) Providing technical leadership, staff level coordination or consultation for a major fishery program; resolving problems that are resistant to established practices; 2) Serving as an expert agency consultant with international, national, and State officials; 3) Conducting field investigations based on newly identified fishery program areas; planning/executing assignments, selecting appropriate techniques, determining project scope/approach.

Examples of GS-14 level work may include: 1) Developing and coordinating major fishery biology research projects that may impact regional scientific objectives; 2) developing or directly influencing the scientific, administrative and technical policies, standards, procedures, and instructions necessary for the effective direction and operation of a fishery program; 3) resolving critical problems resulting from the unprecedented complexities of a scientific fishery study; 4) serving as the principal contact with other Federal agencies, state and local government organizations, and other groups that may affect the success of a major scientific program. The work involved advising or counseling other recognized senior technical experts.
