Gov't wide Merit Promotion
This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is February through December, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.
Performs and occasionally leads others in routine and complex trail maintenance, rehabilitation and construction of graded foot and horse trails. Performs masonry work, primarily dry stone, in the construction, stabilization, and maintenance of historic and non historic structures, mostly on the Park trail system. Performs carpentry work on trail structures such as log checks, foot-bridges, multi-use bridges, corrals, hitch rails, and boardwalks. Work includes building, repairing, and maintaining erosion control structures, retaining walls, tread surface, and reblazing of trails; park boundary line maintenance, removal of vegetation growth and fallen rock and tree obstructions from trails. The work occurs in high visitor use areas, foot and horse use trails in remote backcountry areas, and trails in designated Wilderness areas. Trail work is performed with a variety of hand tools including shovels, picks, fire rakes, swing blades (grass whip), McLeods, pulaskis, rock bars, cross-cut saws, wheelbarrows, grip hoist, etc., and small power equipment such as chainsaws, weed trimmers, rock drills and jack hammers. Operates vehicles (sometimes with towed trailers) in the performance of assigned duties including transport of passengers and equipment to and from worksites.
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

Physical Demands: Heavy Physical effort is required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity include: Frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 pounds, must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use shovel extensively. Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily, and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools.
Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects in various terrain up to 13,000 feet elevation in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks and logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around stock, working around stock, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are not suitable for telework.

Park Headquarters is located in the small city of Fritch, population approximately 2,300. Cost of living is considered low. Rental opportunities are available in the local commuting areas of Fritch, Borger, Stinnett, Panhandle and Amarillo, at varying prices and quality. A variety of restaurants, financial institutions, and grocery stores are all available within a short distance. Amarillo is a 40-minute drive, which offers the closest airport, shopping, etc. The city of Borger is a short 10-minute drive with grocery stores, movie theater, etc., and the closest Walmart. We're 3 hours to Lubbock, 4 hours to Sante Fe, 5 hours to Albuquerque or Oklahoma City and 6 hours to Dallas or Denver. The elevation averages 3,000 feet. The climate is semi-arid with average precipitation of 21 inches. The average temperature is 58 degrees with summer extremes in the 100-degree range and winter extremes around 0 degrees. Tornados are a potential danger, and high velocity winds are common in spring and early summer. The Park does not have housing.
