This position is located at the Range & Meadow Forage Management Research Unit (RMFMR), Pacific West Area, Agricultural Research Service (ARS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in Burns, Oregon. The purpose of this position is to provide the science for sound land and livestock management. The research focuses on productivity, weed invasions, species composition, and water, carbon, and nitrogen cycles of Northern Great Basin rangeland and meadow plant communities.

Education: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Directly related degrees may include Ecology, Biology, Soil Science, Earth Science, Land Resources, Natural Resources, Environmental Science.

At the GS-11:
Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience working with ecological, biological, or agricultural data; experience developing productivity in research involving weed invasions, species composition, water, carbon or nitrogen cycles; AND experience collecting data from range or meadow plants and monitoring plant community change.

Physical Demands
Writing, data entry, and statistical analyses require prolonged periods of sitting and standing at a computer. Laboratory analyses generally require prolonged periods of standing. Greenhouse work may require mixing soil and filling and moving pots or containers. Fieldwork will involve collecting plant and soil samples and may include lifting sacks, cans, batteries, or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Other work may require bending, kneeling, walking, and lifting. Concentration and attention to detail in all activities are required.
Work Environment
Work is performed in office, laboratory, greenhouse, and field settings. Outside work can involve discomfort caused by factors like weather, dust and pollen. Some exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and equipment may be expected. Off-site research locations will require extended periods of automobile travel. Protective clothing and gear are worn as appropriate.
Basic Education Requirements:
Degree: Biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences.
