The Carpenter Leader consistently and independently leads the Building Repair Shop on employees in their assignments, assigns work and schedules under general production accomplishment guidelines and deadlines established by the Carpenter Supervisor. The Carpenter Leader works closely with Carpenter Supervisor on work accomplishments through oral and written reports. Responsible for assigning and monitoring preventive maintenance, assigning work orders, monitoring work order status reports.

Performs general maintenance and repair pertaining to the carpenter trade throughout the Hampton VA Medical Center. This includes inside and outside repairs to the buildings, alterations, and minor improvement projects.
Incumbent installs floor tile requiring material for adhesion, repairs and replaces window guides and tapes, cuts and replaces different size window glass, installs detention screens, acoustical ceiling suspension systems, metal stud walls, partitions and carpet.
Constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness
Fabricates and repairs wooden items such as cabinetry, furniture and other devices as used throughout the patient care services and other areas.
Plans and lays out his/her work from specifications, blueprints, sketches and oral instructions. He/she selects cuts, joins, bonds, fits wooden material and parts using hand and power tools to accomplish the task.
Installs and repairs locks, hardware, door closures, and security combination locks such as push button and safes. Incumbent is required to re-key lock cylinders, duplicate and make new keys.
Required to repair and troubleshoot automatic doors, which includes reading schematics and installation of parts.
Responsible for the Hampton VA Health Care System lock system and maintains all keys codes and door hardware, repairs and maintains automatic doors and installs fire protection door closures on all smoke doors throughout the Medical Center.
Must be a qualified Carpenter with basic knowledge of masonry work as well; must have a full range of knowledge of various types and sizes of wood and plywood, nails, screws, rivets, bolts, adhesives, caulking compounds and lubricants. Must be knowledgeable in the various sizes and types of builder's hardware and their finishes.
Performs other directly related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7am-3:30pm. Must have the flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty which may include weekends and holidays.
