Open to all qualified candidates who meet the eligibility requirements of the Mendenhall Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Because this fellowship is a U.S. Government position, preference must be given to U.S. citizens. Citizens of other nations may be considered under certain circumstances, i.e., when there are no qualified U.S. citizen applicants available. In those instances, the USGS may consider making an offer to a non-citizen provided applicable laws and regulations are followed.
Mendenhall Postdoctoral Research Fellowship - Research Opportunity # 20-15: Applying Modern Computational Techniques to the Detection, Identification, and Location of Volcanic Seismicity
Approximately half of the Nation's 161 active or potentially active volcanoes are considered hazardous because of the manner in which they erupt and the communities within their reach1. Despite the threat these volcanoes would pose if they erupted, the detection of impending volcanic unrest at most of the Nation's moderate to high threat volcanoes is compromised because many of these volcanoes have insufficient monitoring systems. Seismology is a fundamental tool used for monitoring volcanic unrest, as volcanic processes involving magmatic and hydrothermal fluids and their interaction with the solid Earth generate a broad range of seismic waves. Typical event types include brittle failure earthquakes induced by stress changes, long period events and seismic tremor due to the dynamics of liquid and gas motion in conduits and cracks, and a variety of signal types due to magma fracturing and fragmentation. The oscillatory behavior of magmatic and hydrothermal systems causes the bulk of volcanic seismicity and the location of these sources, the quantification of their source mechanisms, and the interpretation of the complex and nonlinear characteristics of this behavior forms the basis of modern volcano seismology. This research opportunity is targeted toward the development and improvement of algorithms to efficiently detect volcanic seismicity in real time, identify the best approaches to classify, locate, and determine source mechanisms for this seismicity, and to implement the developed tools at the USGS volcano observatories.
Proposed work should be aligned with the USGS Natural Hazards Priority Goals and Actions including the Core Responsibility to "increase understanding of ? underlying physical processes ? and determine where and under what conditions hazards occur," as well as Strategic Actions to "promote targeted research on physical hazard initiation processes," and "encourage interchange of ideas in research about the role of fluids in physical processes." Improved understanding of the seismic behavior of U.S. volcanoes is a fundamental component of both the Next Generation Hazards Assessments (in progress), and the forthcoming work to comply with the National Volcano Early Warning System requirements.
Proposed Duty Station: Moffett Field, CA
Areas of Ph.D: Computer science, seismology, geophysics, applied mathematics or related fields (candidates holding a Ph.D. in other disciplines but with knowledge and skills relevant to the Research Opportunity may be considered).
Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following qualifications: Research Computer Scientist, Research Geophysicist, Research Mathematician.
(This type of research is performed by those who have backgrounds for the occupations stated above. However, other titles may be applicable depending on the applicant's background, education, and research proposal. The final classification of the position will be made by the Human Resources Specialist.)
Physical/Environmental Demands:
Work is usually performed in an office setting. The work area normally involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of offices or meeting and training rooms. Work may involve occasional field visits for installation/maintenance of seismic instruments and could involve exposure to moderate risks and discomforts, such as those due to:
- fieldwork that includes some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities.
- adverse weather conditions, such as high winds and low or high temperatures.
This work may require special safety precautions and/or protective clothing and equipment.
Key Requirements:
Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
General Information

The Program also provides: 1) research experiences that enhance the scientific stature and credentials of the Fellows; and 2) scientific expertise to assist in the implementation of the USGS Strategic Plan and the science strategy of its programs. Mendenhall Fellows are expected to publish their results in peer-reviewed scientific outlets.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to be considered for these opportunities, candidates must:
(1) have successfully completed a Ph.D. in a field related to the described Research Opportunity no earlier than October 8, 2016 (5 years before the announcement opening date); OR
(2) if close to completion, have all Ph.D. requirements completed and must submit proof of completion prior to receiving an official start date;
(3) meet the qualification requirements described in the Research Opportunity. The research proposal submitted must demonstrate that the applicant is equipped with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties for the specific Research Opportunity.
Start Date and Completion of PhD:
It is anticipated that this position will start no later than March 2023. The person selected must have all PhD requirements completed and MUST submit proof of completion prior to receiving an official start date. Exceptions may be made for a later start date on a case-by-case basis.
