As directed, develops and prepares portions of the park's resources management plan primarily dealing with biotic resources. Prepares specific action plans pertaining to the management and protection of natural resources. Unusual or difficult problems are discussed with the supervisor before carrying out the assignments.
Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public in order to encourage and facility cooperative regional management strategies. Attends management and professional conferences and other events for the purpose of exchanging information and advancing advocacy for park stewardship.
Following established protocols, coordinates park's natural resources strategies and programs with those on adjacent lands for the purpose of achieving broad ecosystem protection strategies and preventing human impacts. Assists in negotiating cooperative and interagency agreements and other cooperative instruments needed to effectively carry out resource stewardship goals.
In cooperation with appropriate staff, researchers, and partners, the incumbent tests and implements scientific monitoring protocols to identify, evaluate, and do long-term monitoring of natural resources. The includes conducting inventories to determine statistically valid plot
distributions and design. Works with higher supervisor or higher graded specialist in writing new monitoring documents that define monitoring techniques and develops methods for future refinements of protocols.
Follow established procedures and within a defined scope, the incumbent conducts scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects to prevent resource damage, to restore and/or maintain the integrity of critical habitats, native plant and animal communities, managed landscapes, and physical resources, and the minimize human activities that impact resources.
Carries out statistically valid data collection protocols for the monitoring of plant and animal communities and the results of protection, mitigation, and restoration projects. Performs data collection using technology such as electronic data collectors when appropriate. Performs data entry. Conducts analysis of standard data. Makes recommendations to higher graded staff.
Prepares management and scientific reports regarding the results of protection, mitigation, restoration, inventory, monitoring, and research activities.
Incorporates appropriate GIS technology into job to provide comprehensive and scientifically sound answers to inquiries from managers and others. Uses automated methods of data collection, analysis or illustration. Inputs data into digital form and uses computer applications for data analysis, manipulation, and presentation.
May prepare environmental assessments (EAs) for projects in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act. Evaluates EA and environmental impact statements prepared by other federal agencies or groups for impacts on resources.
Works closely with park education staff to incorporate new information into park and partner education programs.
Under the direction of higher graded staff, prepares and maintains specimens in park's collection.
May represent park on NPS regional task groups or similar organizations. Makes presentations in parks, public gatherings, and professional meetings.

Buffalo National River was established in 1972 as the country's first national river, the park protects 135 miles of river from near its origin in the Boston Mountains to the confluence with the White River in Northwest Arkansas. Nearly 100,000 acres in size, roughly one third of the park's land base is designated wilderness. Heavily wooded and extremely rugged terrains are found throughout the park along with numerous hidden caves and waterfalls. There are over 100 miles of maintained trails for hiking and horseback use. There are two developed campgrounds and eight primitive campgrounds throughout the entire park. Of the two developed campgrounds, only one offers amenities such as water and electricity hook ups for visitors. There is one visitor center in each of the three districts, two of which are staffed and open to the public year round.
Harrison has a population of approximately 14,000 people. Harrison offers K-12 schools, a community college, restaurants, shopping, groceries, a movie theatre, a performing arts theatre, a hospital, and specialized clinics. There are several rental properties, as well as homes to purchase within Harrison and Boone County.
