As a Chemical Engineer/Physical Scientist/Chemist in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR), Division of New and Renewed Reactors (DNRL), Corrosion and Steam Generator Branch (NCSG), you will be responsible for a wide range of duties including the following: Review and evaluate chemical engineering aspects of nuclear power plant systems needed for safe operation and safe shutdown of nuclear facilities subject to the NRC Regulatory program. Engineering reviews include chemical engineering and chemical conditions arising from normal plant operations and safe shutdown during normal, transient and accident conditions. Manage and perform studies and analyses of technical issues within the Branch's area or review, including water chemistry, fuel oil, neutron absorbing material and coatings for operating reactors, new reactors, and advanced reactor designs. Provide specialized technical assistance and advice to other Divisions, Regions and Offices. Participate in audits and inspections as a technical specialized team member, or team leader to support the oversight of operating reactors, design and construction of new and advanced reactors, and quality assurance program of vendors.
You will be responsible for performing evaluations of chemical engineering as related to component integrity to support applications for nuclear licensee renewal, nuclear operating plant, and nuclear new reactors. You will utilize technical expertise in the area of chemical engineering (or related scientific discipline) as it relates to the nuclear industry for: 1) reactor licensing up-rate reviews; 2) reviews of age-related degradation issues (e.g. component integrity and inspections, non-destructive examination techniques and capabilities, and operational assessment); 3) regulatory improvements such as development of generic communications; 4) management of technical assistance contracts; and 5) development of NRC research user requests. You will be the principle staff representative in meetings with the public, industry, and other government and senior NRC officials.
You will review chemical engineering safety and regulatory issues in the licensing review of operating reactor amendments, license renewal applications, combined operating license applications, and certification reviews of advanced reactor designs, under CFR Parts 50, 52 and 54. Technical issues may include leadership in the review of very large chemical engineering water chemistry, fuel oil, neutron absorbing material and coatings related evaluations; leadership in the development of significant regulatory guidance; the support for significant oversight issues related to chemical engineering; and the resolution of critical chemical engineering safety issues at operating plants. Apply risk-informed approaches as appropriate. Develop safety evaluation reports and/or makes recommendations within area of technical competence to resolve regulatory or safety issues.

Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. Professional registration or licensure -- Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT)1, or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Absent other means of qualifying under this standard, those applicants who achieved such registration by means other than written test (e.g., State grandfather or eminence provisions) are eligible only for positions that are within or closely related to the specialty field of their registration.
