The Inspector General (IG) of the U.S. Department of Education (Department) heads an independent and objective organization responsible for audit, investigation, and other inspection services related to programs and operations of the Department. The IG provides leadership and coordination and recommends policies for activities designed to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration of programs and operations as well as to prevent and detect fraud and abuse in such programs and operations. The IG is the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Department on the above matters and is responsible for keeping the Secretary and Congress fully and currently informed about problems and deficiencies relating to the administration of the Department's programs and operations and the necessity for and progress of corrective action.
The Office of Inspector General consists of the following five components:
As a Supervisory Auditor with the Office of Inspector General, Audit Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
- Serves as Regional Inspector General for Audit (RIGA) and is responsible for planning, implementing, and guiding a national audit program with minimal oversight from the Assistant Inspector General for Audit or the Deputy Inspector General for Audit.
- Simultaneously manages the audit planning and fieldwork of multiple project teams, ensuring effectiveness and timeliness of the related work.
- Effectively manages the project reporting process, ensuring overall quality and timeliness of project outcomes.
- Makes substantial contributions to the OIG's annual risk based audit planning activities and ensures that individual project results make contributions towards achieving the OIG's mission.
- Provides effective leadership of multiple project teams and constructively manages individual employees while ensuring their professional development.

A. Degree: accounting; or a degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting. The 24 hours may include up to 6 hours in business law. OR
B. Combination of education and experience: at least 4 years of experience in accounting, or an equivalent combination of accounting experience, college level education, and training that provided professional accounting knowledge. The applicant's background must also include one of the following:
1. Twenty-four semester hours in accounting or auditing courses of appropriate type and quality. This can include up to 6 hours of business law;
2. A certificate as Certified Public Accountant or a Certified Internal Auditor, obtained through written examination, or
3. Completion of the requirements for a degree that included substantial course work in accounting or auditing, e.g., 15 semester hours, but that does not fully satisfy the 24-semester-hour requirement of paragraph A, provided that (a) the applicant has successfully worked at the full-performance level in accounting, auditing, or a related field, e.g., valuation engineering or financial institution examining; (b) a panel of at least two higher level professional accountants or auditors has determined that the applicant has demonstrated a good knowledge of accounting and of related and underlying fields that equals in breadth, depth, currency, and level of advancement that which is normally associated with successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in paragraph A; and (c) except for literal nonconformance to the requirement of 24 semester hours in accounting, the applicant's education, training, and experience fully meet the specified requirements.

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-14) in federal service that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position (see description below).
Specialized Experience for the GS-15:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 performing all three (3) of the following duties or work assignments:
1. Expert-level and comprehensive knowledge of auditing techniques, theories, concepts, and practices.
2. Skill in writing reports and effective in dealing tactfully and diplomatically with officials at various organizational levels, within and outside the Department, especially in high pressure situations.
3. Demonstrated ability to develop high performing, motivated teams. Demonstrated ability to effectively and independently analyze and communicate sound and authoritative recommendations on highly complex and sensitive issues/policies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
The quality of your experience will be measured by the extent to which you possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs).
