The incumbent is responsible for the leadership and management of the Division of Visitor & Resource Protection, and is a key member of the park's leadership team. The incumbent directs all law enforcement, fire, dispatch, search and rescue, lifeguard, natural disaster preparation, natural and cultural resources and visitor protection at the park, and coordinates law enforcement (LE) activities with concurring jurisdictions.
The position manages the day to day operation of the park's Visitor & Resource Protection division. The national seashore consists of 20,000 acres of land and water and manages New York's only federally designated wilderness, the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness. Annual visitation within park boundaries is approximately 2.5 million (roughly 400,000 to National Park Service (NPS) operated sites) and has an extensive economic impact to the south shore of Long Island.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions: The incumbent is covered by the requirements of the Director's Order #57: Occupational Medical Standards, Health and Fitness. Planning and administrative work performed by the position is usually sedentary in nature. Interagency contact and coordination, research, training and public affairs require certain amount of travel, some overnight. Fieldwork includes responding to law enforcement incidents and other emergencies may be strenuous and requires a corresponding degree of physical fitness to perform safely. Most work is performed in an office setting or indoors; however, supervision of field activities or emergency incidents require some work to be performed out-of-doors with exposure to all kinds of weather and terrain for extended periods.
