Provides administrative and semi-technical related support to the supervisor, or manager, Aviation Safety Inspectors, and Administrative Officer by obtaining background data, preparing reports, reviewing applications, interviewing applicants, processing certificates, and maintaining technical and administrative files. Works under the supervision of a Front Line Manager (FLM).
Processes FAA-issued airman certificates, interviews applicants to determine qualifications for non-complex certificates, processes FAA authorizations such as inspection authorization, aircrew program designee, and aerobatic competency. Processes FAA-issued operator and air agency certificates such as air carrier, repair stations, and approved schools. Examines applications and supporting documents for completeness, consistency of information, and assures correction, if required.
Responsible for processing temporary airman certification files for certificates issued by designated examiners. Examines applications and supporting documents for completeness, consistency of information, and fulfillment of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) requirements. Assures correction, if required. Monitors and tracks returned files.
Supports the Designated Written Test Examiner (DWTE) program by providing orientation and training of new examiners, providing required annual and periodic training as necessary. Has responsibility for security, accountability and destruction of question selection sheets, sorting, assembling and furnishing written test examiners with the test materials, and following up to ensure corrective action is taken if necessary.
May conduct FAA written examinations by assembling and distributing test materials and by preparing necessary supporting documentation. Monitors written test examinations.
Researches appropriate handbooks, collects information, organizes material pertinent to meetings and training sessions such as pre-certification, examiner renewal, inspector authorization, and flight examiner and written test examiner training sessions when necessary.
Assists with interpreting and implementing newly modified agency directives relating to accident, incident, enforcement processing, and airmen/operator certification file processing. Determines necessary action and notification to assure staff is aware of latest changes.
Answers inquiries from and advises unit personnel regarding the preparation of the unit's technical work.
Assists in composing complex technical correspondence. Maintains, reviews, and revises form letters.
Receives, sorts, and distributes incoming correspondence, attaching background information when necessary. Responsible for maintaining correspondence control system and suspense files. Reviews and assembles outgoing material for mailing.
Assembles information and reviews for proper format, grammar, spelling, and accuracy. Reviews outgoing correspondence for grammatical accuracy, procedural agreement, factual inconsistencies, attachments, enclosures, dates, and signatures.
Prepares reports (such as accident, incident, violation, recurring and special reports) by researching, requesting information, creating files, preparing control sheets, copying and distributing preliminary and final report documents, and reviewing for accuracy and completeness. Responsible for maintaining individual report logs including the assignment of report or control numbers. May be responsible for researching and composing sections of reports, as directed. On own initiative, composes and prepares special and recurring reports. May extract information for reports from automated database.
At the FG-7 Level: Works under the general supervision of a Front Line Manager (FLM). Operates as an Aviation Safety Assistant in a Flight Standards field office utilizing advanced automation system tools relevant in the Safety Assurance System Environment.
